Doctor Who Series 11: Everything we know so far: May 2017

Contary to previous articles my thoughts are here too. As more details arrive my opinions will be removed.
Everything italics is pure speculation and rumour

Regular Cast

13th Doctor - TBD (Male 30's)
New Female Companion
Jack Harkness

The Rumour for this one is that the BBC want to return to the old David Tennant format of a young Doctor. This means that  the chance of a female Doctor is low. This can also be seen through a report that a parent rang the BBC because they feared that a gender change for the Time Lord would confuse his daughter. The BBC Helpline officer replied that there were no plans for a female Doctor. In my opinion this is because they are holding on to this idea to boost the ratings if Chibnall's series fails in that department.

Secondly a new companion is speculated which probably means they won't a clean slate. This is what Moffat wanted to do so some would see this as a waste of the two new companions, Bill and Nardole. My belief is that these two characters will leave in the series finale of series 10, so that the Christmas Special is focused on Capaldi.

John Barrowman has also wanted to return. It is believed that he and Moffat have fallen out about Jack's return to Doctor Who. Barrowman has stated that Chibnall has written a lot for Jack in the past so his return could be seen soon. The rumour for Jack's return was last seen for the 2016 Christmas Special but the companion for that episode was Nardole.

It is also rumoured that Chibnall will be quite different to Davies and Moffat but I believe he will be similar to Davies as both like to write for characters you care about. He may also have a TARDIS team like Dinosaurs on a Spaceship...

Enemies

?
A lot of new monsters

Probably expect the Daleks because of the unconfirmed but obviously true contractually obligated return for the monsters. It has also been stated that Chibnall wants to have a lot more new monsters and doesn't want to rely on the old favourites. Hinchcliffe also had this view and he is seen as the most successful showrunner in a lot of Whovians' eyes.

Episodes

12 episodes + Christmas Special

Executive Producers

Chris Chibnall - Showrunner
Mark Strevans

Filming

Early 2018

Airdate

Autumn 2018

Writers

Mark Gattis originally stated that he would like to return but now says that he has no plans to and his script for Series 10 certainly seems to have everything he likes in it (Victorians and Ice Warriors) which could mean it is his swansong. I believe this is because Chibnall wants the show to be new and his writing room style of writing which is rumoured might not want to have the shadow of Moffat with them, which unfortunately is Gattis because he had a large involvement with Moffat's time on the show.

Certain writers have experessed their views:

Mark Gatiss: “I think Chris [Chibnall] has got an entirely new writing team. I don’t think anyone knows any details, which is kind of exciting!”
Phil Ford: “Obviously, I would jump at doing more Doctor Who.”
Catherine Tregenna: “I would absolutely love to get involved again. It was, and still is, a great experience. I’d definitely write [an episode] again… if they’d have me back!”
Neil Gaiman: “Now I’m just sort of hoping that I can get one done while Peter Capaldi is still the Doctor, because it would be a very sad thing if I lost my chance to write for a grumpy, Scottish Doctor.”
Gareth Roberts: “I’d love to see William Russell back [as Ian Chesterton] in the show! That’s so rich and so fertile for someone to do. You’d have to explain it enough so that everyone would get it.”
Neil Cross: “There’s a whole bunch of stuff I want to do.”

Doctor Who Series 10 Reviews #'8: The Pyramid at the End of the World

The Pyramid at the End of the World by Peter Harness and Steven Moffat

Pyramid at the End of the World is the second episode of the three part adventure which is the 6th story of the main run of Series 10.

Well I must say this episode was good. I mean I don't think it was as good as Harness and Moffat's last contribution but it does seem like these two do work together. As Moffat was added on late to this script it is obvious that Harness was the original writer and Moffat twicked to a sufficient amount that he had to be credited. Contrary to other reviewers I could tell which bits that I thought were Moffat's contribution. Particular the first episode of the series were I felt that Capaldi was going back to Matt Smith's Doctor, not of course Capaldi's fault but I am pretty certain this is Moffat.

Doctor Rating

12th Doctor: 8/10 - Shame to give him this score because I thought that his acting was excellent but due to a bit of Matt Smith adding I have to deduct a point

Companion Rating

Bill Potts: 8/10 - Bill was really quite sweet in this episode
Nardole: 7/10 - Back to the side-lines to you Nardole. It is a shame because as off last week I assumed now was the time that Nardole was going to do something from now on. Never Mind

Enemy Rating

The Monks: 10/10 - Truly brilliant and less like the Silence in this episode

Story Notes

Story: 9/10 - Good but not original as other films have used this idea but due to the interest of the invasion strategy I can give it a high score
Seriousness: 10/10 - End of the world scenerio
Scariness: 8/10 - The monks were less scary in broad daylight but still terrifying all the same.
Humour: 9/10 - A lot of funny dialogue in this episode especially near the end
Continuity: 7/10 - The lack of UNIT is a real blunder as is forgetting that World War Three has already happened, in 2006
Total: 43/50

Rest of Cast

Secretary General: 7/10
Don Brabbit: 7/10
Erica: 7/10
Douglas: 8/10 - A bit of waste of the brilliant Tony Gardner
Ilya: 6/10
Xialon: 6/10
Total: 41/60

Total: 117/150

1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%
6. Oxygen = 73.07%
7. Extremis = 80.77%
8. The Pyramid at the End of the World = 78%

The second highest for the episodes so far. I think that is again not entirely accurate. I would probably put it third behind Extremis and Oxygen.

Story Ranking:

1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%
6. Oxygen = 73.07%
7. Extremis/The Pyramid at the End of the World = 79.39%*

*The story is a three parter so the average will change

This three parter seems to be the best so far. Hopefully the final part can complete a very good set of episodes.

Scores out of 10:

Return of the Doctor Mysterio: 7/10
The Pilot: 7/10
Smile: 6/10
Thin Ice: 6/10
Knock Knock: 7/10
Oxygen: 8/10
Extremis: 8/10
Pyramid at the End of the World: 8/10

8/10 is still a good score but I am afraid that it appears that a '9' won't be given this series.

The Line Count and Pros and Cons for this episode will be up in around July once my GCSE's are over.

Join me next week (although it might not be next week) for my review for the concluding part of this trilogy: The Lie of the Land

Series 10: Half Way How are we going?

Now we are half way I thought I'd take a look back at see where each series lies at this stage, after 6 episodes. So he is the ranking of the ten new who episodes from an average of the first 6 episodes

1. Series 2 = 7.83
2. Series 1 = 7.50
3. Series 4 = 7.33
~ Series 6 = 7.33
5. Series 7 = 7.00
~ Series 9 = 7.00
~ Series 10 = 7.00
8. Series 8 = 6.83
9. Series 3 = 6.50
~ Series 5 = 6.50

Series 10 seems to be pretty low down but generally earlier episodes are weaker than the later episodes so it can still easily improve. Look at Series 3 and 5 for example they are normally a lot higher. Series 6 ends up being a lot lower at the end of the series so all could change.

Doctor Who Series 10 Reviews #7: Extremis

Extremis by Steven Moffat

Extremis is the 6th episode and 6th story of the 10th series of new who, or the 36th overall. It is the first episode of a three parter, the second in new who history. It features the first appearance of the Monks and the 3rd full appearance of Missy and 25th story to feature the Master overall. It is the second appearance of Moira

First things first, apologies for the late review. I have been caught up in GCSE's so I am struggling to get everything sorted. Like last week I won't be doing pros and cons until after the GCSE's are done (11 done 14 to go).

Well this episode is quintessentially Moffat, minus Timey-Wimey. Back and forth this story went. The episode was clever but again another story that was rip off another - in this case the Android Invasion. The Missy stuff felt shoe-horned in and Missy being in the vault was a major disappointment. This seems all negative but there were great moments, read on...

Oh and I did not like the use of an inappropriate pre-water shed word.

Doctor Rating

12th Doctor: 9/10 - It seems that Moffat and the other writers have finally decided what they want Capaldi to be. He is of course very good at playing the blind man (literally). This piece of story-telling won't last in my opinion for post this episode.

Companion Rating

Bill: 8/10
Nardole: 8/10 - I have to make a point here. He is more than just side-kick here. For once he does something.

Enemy Rating

The Monks: 9/10 - Terrifyingly creepy but a little bit of a rip off of the silents to gain 10/10

Story Notes

Story: 8/10 - Bit of a rip off of Android Invasion and the Missy stuff was a bit shoe-horned in
Seriousness: 9/10 - World's fake - pretty serious but not 10/10 because it is fake!
Scariness: 8/10 - the Monks were scary but generally they weren't in it much
Humour: 9/10 - Very funny - particularly that Pope scene
Continuity: 6/10 - Difficult to this for a first parter but the TARDIS translation service did not work with no explanation and also Nardole had River Song's diary that was in the library originally.

Rest of Cast

Penny: 8/10 - Small role but great reaction to the Pope
The Pope: 8/10 - Fabulous actor that I remember from Turn Left were he was also fantastic
Cardinal Angelo: 7/10 - Good character again
Missy: 8/10 - A different side to the character but I did not quite believe Missy crying. I don't know if it was genuine or not

Total: 105/130

1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%
6. Oxygen = 73.07%
7. Extremis = 80.77%

Finally a score that breaks the 80% barrier. I wouldn't say that Exremis is actually my favourite episode though. I would say that Oxygen is, despite it's flaws that an effect scores greatly in this sort of scoring system.
Extremis puts the bar high for next weeks episode for the two parter. Then we can have a story ranking as well as episodic.

Scores out of 10

Return of the Doctor Mysterio: 7/10
The Pilot: 7/10
Smile: 6/10
Thin Ice: 6/10
Knock Knock: 7/10 (-1)
Oxygen: 8/10
Extremis: 8/10

Knock Knock has been removed my score because I compared it to other haunted house episode Hide, that has a 7 and thought that it was probably on par or just a tad (but not enough) higher so therefore I have lowered the score to a 7.

See you soon for the second part Pyramid for the End of the World.

Doctor Who Series 10 Revies #6: Oxygen

Oxygen by Jamie Mathieson

Oxygen is the fifth episode of series 10 proper of the revived series Doctor Who. It features the Doctor being blind and the return of Nardole in a regular role.

Now first of all regular viewers will know that this has been posted a day earlier than usual. I have to say this is because during the next six weeks I will be enduring my GCSEs. This means that will  not have the time to watch an episode again with my review cap on as it were. However I do want to be able to keep you all updated on my views and I feel that if I write reviews after the end of the series as a whole my view on the earlier episodes would have changed somewhat, therefore I bring you the review now. Due to time restraints I also want be able to do the 'pros' and 'cons' section as normal. This is something I will do after the completion of the series for the episodes that I will miss.

First things first it is nice to have Jamie Mathieson write an un-altered script again. He was very good in series 8 but unfortunately had a bit of blip last year. Also this episode is a base-under siege story which is my favourite but I don't think the episode fully utilised the setting enough nor were guest actors used to their prime as they were during the RTD era. Lastly I was pleased to see Nardole in proper episode, the first since episode 1. He didn't have much to do here either as he probably was a late entry to this script as well but not so late that it can't be missed (Episode 1 was by Steven so he could edit quickly, the Christmas Special was filmed later on).

Doctor Rating

12th Doctor: 9/10 - Very good as per usual. I'm not sure I really like the idea of him being blind yet though

Companion Rating

Bill Potts: 8/10 - Despite the exciting things happening to her I can't quite say I thought she was as stand out this week
Nardole: 6/10 - Good to have him here but I don't think his dialogue is as funny as previous episodes. He was a bit wingy - no problem with Matt Lucas though

Enemy Rating

Space Zombies: 8/10 - Nothing new but they were a great threat and were visually terrifying.

Story Notes

Story: 7/10 - It was a basic run of the mill base under siege story with nothing to new apart from the evil capitalism view - is Mathieson a communist?
Seriousness: 10/10 - The Doctor is blind, Bill nearly dies, others do die, the sonic is destroyed and the TARDIS is lost into space
Scariness: 8/10 - I wasn't as scared as last week but the zombies did look scary and the space stuff was scary too but not as scary as it could have been
Comedy: 6/10 - Little humour moments here and there but I didn't really find Nardole's jokes funny this week.
Continuity: 7/10 - One problem I have is about Bill surviving and the extension of the TARDIS' force field which as extended greatly from last time

Rest of Cast

Ivan: 6/10
Tasker: 7/10
Dahn-Ran: 7/10
Abby: 6/10

The characters were very shallow and under-developed that not one of them did I care about when they died. In the RTD era I used to get upset when characters die and now I don't

Total: 95/130

1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%
6. Oxygen = 73.07%

Very interesting as I would say that Oxygen was marginally my favourite episode of the series so far. Before the series began I actually predicted this would be my favourite overall, hopefully we will get better episodes.

Scores out of 10

Return of the Doctor Mysterio: 7/10
The Pilot: 7/10
Smile: 6/10
Thin Ice: 6/10
Knock Knock: 8/10
Oxygen: 8/10

There we have it. Knock Knock and the Return of the Doctor Mysterio are at threat of moving down a score but I haven't firmly decided that yet.

Due to GCSEs, line count is another thing effected. I will do a line count later on in June along with all the other episodes.

Hopefully I will be able to review Extremis but don't hold your breath, especially if you are in space because your lungs will explode.

Doctor Who Series 10 Reviews #5: Knock Knock

Knock Knock by Mike Barlett

Knock Knock is the fourth episode of the tenth series of the modern era of Doctor Who. It guest stars David Suchet.

Mike Barlett's script was scary but perhaps let down by the ending... Here is the review...

But firstly the vault. I am a little disappointed that the person in the Vault is good and friends with the Doctor, which heavily hints at it being Missy or the Master. This is something that I am a little bit annoyed about. I want whatever's in the vault to remain an absolute mystery and a surprise and something that is very threatening when it is released.

Pros

The Creepiness - This episode was generally scary - just let down by the ending

The Twist - I actually enjoyed the twist at the end of him being her son. It showed the undying love of a son and his mother

David Suchet's Great Acting - Suchet is the most famous guest this series and he was certainly very good in this episode

Cons

Bill thinking the Doctor cramps her style - This is quite annoying as before Bill was so amazed by the Doctor but now thinks he will ruin her style

Everybody Lives - Death is something that Doctor Who has oddly shied away from recently which is incredibly annoying and peculiar . There was no reason for all the friends to come back to life.

The Harmless Villain - I didn't mind it in the episode but this is the fourth episode in a row where the bad guy isn't really that bad.

Unanswered Questions - How did no one notice, .i.e family or police that students were going missing every 20 years at the same place? How did the Landlord sneak about?

Doctor Rating

12th Doctor: 8/10 - Nothing special done in this episode

Companion Rating

Bill Potts: 7/10 - Good acting but as seen above I am a little annoyed about her sudden opinion of the Doctor

Enemy Rating

The Landlord: 10/10 - Absolutely fantastic and well acted
The Dryads: 8/10 - Why do floorboards squeak? Excellent use of something mundane and turning into something scary. Shame they are able to regurgitate their victims

Story Rating

Story: 7/10 - Nothing too special
Seriousness - 6/10: Losses points because of the ending
Scariness: 9/10 - Losses a point because of the ending but it was very freaky
Humour: 6/10 - There were bits and pieces that were humorous but overall not that funny
Continuity: 6/10 - The unanswered questions results in this low score
Total: 34/50

Rest of Cast Performance

Shireen: 8/10
Paul: 8/10
Harry: 7/10
Felicity: 7/10
Eliza: 10/10 - Superb acting
Total: 40/50

Total: 107/140

1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%

I agree with the result that I did think it was the best episode of the series so far. However I thought it was more better than the Pilot than the score suggests. The episode has its faults though - which is why the score is so low. It appears this series that the episodes are all very close together in score.

Scores out of 10

Return of the Doctor Mysterio: 7/10
The Pilot: 7/10
Smile: 6/10
Thin Ice: 6/10 (-1)
Knock Knock: 8/10

Thin Ice, just like Smile, fell to a the victim of recent episode syndrome resulting in it being a higher score than it deserves. My reason for the change was that it was no where near as good as previous 7/10's so it had to move down to a 6.
