Doctor Who Series 10 Reviews #7: Extremis

Extremis by Steven Moffat

Extremis is the 6th episode and 6th story of the 10th series of new who, or the 36th overall. It is the first episode of a three parter, the second in new who history. It features the first appearance of the Monks and the 3rd full appearance of Missy and 25th story to feature the Master overall. It is the second appearance of Moira

First things first, apologies for the late review. I have been caught up in GCSE's so I am struggling to get everything sorted. Like last week I won't be doing pros and cons until after the GCSE's are done (11 done 14 to go).

Well this episode is quintessentially Moffat, minus Timey-Wimey. Back and forth this story went. The episode was clever but again another story that was rip off another - in this case the Android Invasion. The Missy stuff felt shoe-horned in and Missy being in the vault was a major disappointment. This seems all negative but there were great moments, read on...

Oh and I did not like the use of an inappropriate pre-water shed word.

Doctor Rating

12th Doctor: 9/10 - It seems that Moffat and the other writers have finally decided what they want Capaldi to be. He is of course very good at playing the blind man (literally). This piece of story-telling won't last in my opinion for post this episode.

Companion Rating

Bill: 8/10
Nardole: 8/10 - I have to make a point here. He is more than just side-kick here. For once he does something.

Enemy Rating

The Monks: 9/10 - Terrifyingly creepy but a little bit of a rip off of the silents to gain 10/10

Story Notes

Story: 8/10 - Bit of a rip off of Android Invasion and the Missy stuff was a bit shoe-horned in
Seriousness: 9/10 - World's fake - pretty serious but not 10/10 because it is fake!
Scariness: 8/10 - the Monks were scary but generally they weren't in it much
Humour: 9/10 - Very funny - particularly that Pope scene
Continuity: 6/10 - Difficult to this for a first parter but the TARDIS translation service did not work with no explanation and also Nardole had River Song's diary that was in the library originally.

Rest of Cast

Penny: 8/10 - Small role but great reaction to the Pope
The Pope: 8/10 - Fabulous actor that I remember from Turn Left were he was also fantastic
Cardinal Angelo: 7/10 - Good character again
Missy: 8/10 - A different side to the character but I did not quite believe Missy crying. I don't know if it was genuine or not

Total: 105/130

1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%
6. Oxygen = 73.07%
7. Extremis = 80.77%

Finally a score that breaks the 80% barrier. I wouldn't say that Exremis is actually my favourite episode though. I would say that Oxygen is, despite it's flaws that an effect scores greatly in this sort of scoring system.
Extremis puts the bar high for next weeks episode for the two parter. Then we can have a story ranking as well as episodic.

Scores out of 10

Return of the Doctor Mysterio: 7/10
The Pilot: 7/10
Smile: 6/10
Thin Ice: 6/10
Knock Knock: 7/10 (-1)
Oxygen: 8/10
Extremis: 8/10

Knock Knock has been removed my score because I compared it to other haunted house episode Hide, that has a 7 and thought that it was probably on par or just a tad (but not enough) higher so therefore I have lowered the score to a 7.

See you soon for the second part Pyramid for the End of the World.
