Star Wars Rebels Season 4 - A few thoughts from trailer 2

The Stories

Characters

Ezra Bridger - Ezra is quite obviously the main character of the series, constantly topping everyone else in terms of episodes that he features most prominently in. Dave Filoni has said that the last 11 episodes of the series are about Ezra and the wolves. It looks like Ezra's tale certainly involves Lothol and perhaps the final battle to liberate it, which might result in his fall. All we know is that by 3 ABY Ezra is no longer a Jedi, be it left the order or dead. The temptation of the dark side seemed to be last year's theme for Ezra so I doubt that will continue so it is more likely he will die. However Filoni said that the mysterious sith Presence will make a return at some point so it is still possible Ezra may turn...

Kanan Jarrus - Kanan is the character that every series finale I thought he would die. I am still wrong about that one. Perhaps this is his turn. Kanan's relationship with Hera seems to be a sup-polt in this series. I think Kanan will definitely die and it will probably be saving one of the crew, either Hera or Ezra. Like Ezra, Kanan has to have left the order by 3 ABY and I can't see him turning to the darkside so death seems to be the only answer...

Hera Syndulla - Hera is currently a captain in the Rebel Alliance, the highest rank of the Ghost crew. We know Hera will survive this as she is safe and well by Rogue One. The foucs with Hera seems to be her moving through the ranks to eventually a general, her relationship with Kanan and the assassination attempt on her life by Ruhk. I think Hera will feature more in this series after a little bit of a back seat in the previous two seasons.

Sabine Wren - Sabine was the first of the Ghost crew to leave the series only to return in the series finale and is a regular once more it seems. Whether her story will end with Mandalore at the beginning of the series we will have to wait and see but I presume it does.

Zeb Orrelius - Zeb doesn't really feature in the trailer too much, which suggests that he is simply the extra and therefore probably won't die but he might. Not to much to say about him really.

Chopper - Again with Chopper there isn't too much to say other than it looks like he is going under cover (again).

Rex - Rex doesn't feature in the trailer at all really other than in the background. At Celebration IX, Filoni and Hildalgo showed a picture of Rex in commondo costume, strongly suggesting that the former Rick Sant is Rex in Return of the Jedi. This would suggest that Rex survives. It has also been confirmed we will see Gregor and Wolffe again so it is likely that Rex will pop up in those episodes

Kallus - Along wit the Ghost crew, Kallus is the only character left from the beginning. He of course is now formally on the side of the rebels, complete with new costume and new hair design. I'm not sure what they'l do with Kallus but it probably involve spying to some degree. As he is not on Scariff at the time of Rogue One he could be relocated or he will have to die too. It would be quite powerful if he dies with Zeb, who were of course mortal enemies at one point. I'm not sure if Kallus will become a member of the ghost crew or he will have a sort of semi-role as a member of the ghost crew like Rex and AP-5.

Thrawn - The primary antagonist is back for another season, something that is unheard of in Star Wars Rebels. Thrawn is lacking in the trailer which suggests either that the marketing team don't see him as a headliner any more or he leaves pretty early on. As it has been confirmed  that the first 5 episodes will be about the wrapping up of loose threads it is possible that Thrawn will depart in those episodes. The last 11 episodes are all about Lothol and wolves. I think there are two possible exits for Thrawn. One he splits with the empire (not joining the rebels however) because he disagrees with Krennic's Stardust project. Secondly he could be killed by Ruhk, the new character, because in legends that character stabs Thrawn after Thrawn wipes out his species. If Thrawn leaves early on I hope that he doesn't die so that he can be used again but if he does have to die I wouldn't mind him being betrayed but I would hope it would be at the end of the season (I know that that is contradictary of me as I hate the kill a series villain in the finale cliché) otherwise he feels like he has just been tagged on really.

Ruhk - Rukh is the second character to brought into the new disney canon from the old legends. Ruhk is a sort of assassin for Thrawn, who in the end kills him. In this series he is voiced by Warwick Davies, who has been in the most Star Wars projects behind Anthony Daniels (14) and Kenny Baker (7) and a few others. Warwick is certainly going to rise from his current total of 4 to 7 with an already confirmed role in Rebels (obviously), Episode 8 and Han Solo. Ruhk's primary role this season seems to be to assassinate Hera.

Governor Pryce - All she does in the trailer is walk but I reckon she will have a largeish role because of he being the governor of Lothol, which seems to feature prominently again.

Mon Mothma - It is unknown if Yavin is currently the Rebels HQ or if it is just a base but Mon Mothma certainly seems to be on the base. Mon Mothma is in charge of the Rebels so that makes sense. A large story for the first five episodes seems to be how Mon Mothma and Saw Gerrera split ways

Saw Gerrera - Saw returns and looks like he fills the Darth Maul evil-mentor role for Ezra. He seems to think that Mon Mothma is too passive and this looks like it is the reason why Saw decides to lead a separate group. A storyline involving Saw seems to focus a kyber crystal. It is also important to remember that we still need to see Saw's injuries that we see him cope with in Rogue One

Edrio "Two Tubes" - The trusty side-kick to Saw makes an appearane

General Jan Dodanna - Dodanna seems to fill the role of Sato but I strongly doubt that he will have many episodes were he is a prominent character

Bail Organa - Bail probably appears only for a bit of hologram advice and for the larger rebellion but I do hope we get a proper story with him or two. So far he is only in little cameo appearances here and there.

Tarkin - Tarkin seems to be not seeing eye to eye with Thrawn, believing that that Krennic's death star project is better for the empire. His disagreements with Thrawn could leave to the latter leaving the empire

Fen Rau, Ursa Wren, Tristan Wren and Bo-Katan Kryze - The Mandalorians probably have a large role at the beginning. If they beat  the empire than the Mandalorian disappearance is most peculiar which leads to two conclusions. Either the Mandalorians will loose and die or they decide that they don't want to have any part in the bigger rebellion.

Ahsoka Tano - You have to leave with this one don't you. We know she is in it but what is her role. That we will have to wait and see.

Peter Capaldi claims he will not return after his initial depature

Peter Capaldi has announced that he thinks that it is highly unlikely he will return in the future.

This is a surprising claim for a variety of reasons and perhaps adds a bit of fire to a theory of mine

Firstly Peter is a fan of the show. A proper fan. Actors of Doctors 3, 5, 6, 10 and 12 have all been fans before and all the Doctors bar one (Eccleston) are fans now. Peter Capaldi knows all that there is to know Doctor Who. So of course his time has to come to end as the Doctor but still is a Doctor. You think he would be more than honoured to come back. Well you see, you could just argue that he saying this so that he can do more jobs and not be seen as the Doctor still. We have to remember that Peter has done a lot of interesting jobs in the past and probably wants to continue doing that now, therefore putting Doctor Who to bed. However it is interesting that he said this in the first place.

Peter left it until quite late before deciding that he would leave. He isn't the first to do this. Hartnell was forced to leave by the producers because of his ill health, Pertwee decided to leave after the departure of everyone left from his start in the production, Tom left after fallouts with the producer, Peter Davison was umming and urring over whether to leave and later said that he wished he did the fourth series, Colin was sacked, Sylvester was cut off as the show was axed, Paul was never given a second chance, Christopher fell out with producers, David Tennant also ummed and urred over whether to do a fourth series as did Matt and Peter. Only Patrick saw it fit.

So the two most recent actors to leave, like Peter, definitely, or as far as we can tell, ruled out a fourth series. The difference between Capaldi and his predecessors is that they said they would definitely return for an anniversary in the future. Capaldi says he wouldn't. Troughton and T.Baker and Eccleston have all had similar responses in the past but the first two did indeed return, Troughton more than any other Doctor actor.

So why has Capaldi said this? Capaldi claims that he wasn't ever a fan of the multi-doctor stories and thought that when you go you have to go. This is interesting as most fans of his degree enjoy the odd multi-doctor story now and again as it does make you feel giddy seeing all those eras of the show together, however of course not everything is popular with everyone. It is also interesting because Capaldi's last adventure is with another Doctor. This is such a strange move by Moffat, if Capaldi's claims are true, because the Christmas Episode features an array of Capaldi's loved things so why put another Doctor in. Jon Pertwee wasn't too much of a fan of The Three Doctors and that was a special episode. Capaldi's departure is a special but it is special for him not for the show. If you were to go with a multi-doctor episode the two episodes you really must avoid are the first and last of the principal Doctor's tenure because those episodes really need to be about him. Therefore it is very odd that Capaldi who claims not to like multi-doctor episodes would be okay for a multi-doctor episode to be in his farewell episode.

It is of course possible that Moffat thought that this idea was the only one he could think off as he didn't expect to write the Christmas Special, as did Peter who thought that his time would be up after The Doctor Falls. Another reason of course is that Capaldi is making up why he won't return to cover the true reason that may be what I said above in the type cast argument or perhaps he fell out with the BBC. This could because Capaldi wasn't sure whether to stay and then suddenly he is gone and doesn't want to return. I think that Capaldi was sacked behind the scenes so that the show could have a proper revamp. If you think about this does make sense. Colin Baker was sacked but that wasn't public. Baker resigned in public when in reality he had already been sacked. Chibnall said that he always knew that his Doctor would be a woman so therefore why did he ask Capaldi to come back? The answer is probably he didn't

But that's just a theory of course.

Star Wars Episode IX Change of Director and writer and date of release

Colin Trevorrow was fired from Episode IX last week and now this week his replace has been revealed: JJ Abrams.

JJ Abrams of course directed, wrote the story and screenplay and produced Episode 7. JJ had impressed Kathleen Kennedy so much that he was hired to be the Executive Producer on Episode 8 and 9. Now JJ is also producing that film as well as writing the screenplay and directing.

Colin Trevorrow was the original director with Derek Conolly writing, based of the works of Rian Johnson. After Carrie Fisher's passing Colin and new screenwriter Jack Thorne began to rewrite the script from scratch. Complications seemed to have arose where Kathleen Kennedy has now taken the decision to remove Trevorrow from the project. Although the unsuccessful rewrites probably was the major reason for the sacking it would have been deeper than that otherwise Colin would have remained a director. In his replace as writers are JJ and Chris Terrio, meaning that the other screenwriters have also been sacked.

Following the sacking of Trevorrow there was much speculation on who would replace him. If there wasn't so much time restraints I am guessing that they would have gone with a new director. Both Johnson and Abrams were, as far as we can tell, successful directors in the eyes of Kathleen Kennedy, who obviously hasn't liked every director she has found. Both of the two were also already involved in IX to some capacity. Johnson wrote the story treatment and Abrams was the executive producer. It has been reported that Johnson was offered the role but turned it down so they went to Abrams, who obviously accepted

The move to December is to be expected as the writing process has to start again from scratch and it would be near impossible to get that ready for the original November filming time so the decision to swap it with Aladdin in the scheduling is a wise move from Disney. I don't mind particularly but this does mean a year and half wait for a Star Wars film, which is nothing for pre-Disney fans but it is longer than we have recently become accustomed too.

What I hope with Abrams is that, in his script, he doesn't play it as safe as he did in the Force Awakens. If we get another Starkiller Base, I'll be fuming, absolutely fuming.

Problems involving the crew of a Star Wars film may seem familiar - and that's because its happened before on all but one film - Episode 8, but that film still had the issue of the death of one of the lead actresses. Here is a timeline of what exactly has changed.

So the Episode IX Timeline has looked like this in terms of story and screenwriters

Story: Rian Johnson
Screenplay: Chris Trevorrow and Derek Connolly

Story & Screenplay: Chris and Derek

Story: Chris and Derek
Sreenplay: Chris and Jack Thorne

Story & Screenplay: JJ and Chris Terrio.

Doctor Who Experience has Closed

After 7 years the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff has closed.

The experience contains an interactive adventure with Peter Capaldi's Doctor as well as original prop consumed.

Peter Capaldi led the tribute to the Experience.

The decision to close the Experience was made by the BBC due to the fact that they could no longer afford the building that the experience is housed in. It is believed that the experience will live on in some form around the country.

I was luck enough to visit the experience earlier this year. It is an amazing experience for any Whovian and it is a real shame that it has been shut.

The experience did attract many visitors to Cardiff from around the world and was one of the city's most successful attractions.

Class cancelled

When Steven Moffat's replacement was hard to find the decision was made to postpone the series 10 to Spring, partly to allow Moffat to write a series that he didn't ever plan on doing and also to try and boost the viewing figures which were at a considerable low point (the latter plan didn't work).

This gap was filled by a new spin off, Class. It came about after Patrick Ness, award winning "young adult" novelist was contacted by Moffat to write for series 9. Ness declined because he was working on a new young adult spin off series that he was hoping would be "picked up" by a network. Hearing of this news the BBC contacted Ness and asked him to showrun  a new series to air in the autumn slot in 2016, where Doctor Who had been in the past two years. Class was however meant for BBC Three not BBC One.

Doctor Who has enjoyed an array of spin offs over the years, some "canon" (which doesn't officially exist as a term in the Whoniverse) some not (I consider canon to be anything BBC produced on television, although I do tend to choose between big finish audios and novels regarding what is canon and what is not). These spin offs include the short lived K9 and Company, and the 2 Russel T Davies spin offs: The highly regarded children's Sarah Jane Adventures which ran for a successful 5 years before the passing of the lead start Elizabeth Sladen. The second of the RTD spin offs is Torchwood which has recently returned for a 12 part 1 hour 5th series, but audio, so canon or not is to be decided. It did enjoy an on-an off appearance across 6 series. None of these spin offs have ever been targeted at "young adult" level so this was new for the world of Doctor Who, which arguably it's lowest audience range is the "young adult" one.

As previously stated of the past three spin offs 1 was a major success, 1 a partial success and 1 a failure. Class would join the latter group. Class is also not the first to feature on BBC Three. Torchwood joined that channel. It shouldn't have been feared at the early stages that Class being on BBC Three would affect its success for three reasons. Firstly BBC Three is the BBC's channel for the "young adult" which Class is for. Secondly viewing figures don't have to be that high to remain on the channel, they don't expect the same sort of level as BBC One or Two. Thirdly Torchwood started on BBC Three before being moved to BBC Two then BBC One because of its success. Then a change happened.

For two reasons the BBC decided to make BBC Three an online service only. One reason was that the "young adult" target range tends to watch things like Netflix and other online streaming services. The BBC is the leading service in television and radio and enjoys a small but steady appearance on the internet. It had no streaming service and Lord Hall (Director-General of the BBC) was quite keen for the BBC to be a major contender in the relatively new service of broadcasting. The second reason, and the major reason in my opinion, is cost saving. Interestingly the BBC does not own the channels that they broadcast on. Each channel is "rented" by the television network. This idea will probably slowly die out because the channel number doesn't really matter any more. Anyway, this decision could easily affect Class. And arguably it did.

Class was barley advertised on television. BBC Shows on the new online BBC Three require trailers so that the shows are acknowledged because the BBC Three online doesn't automatically become the so well known as Netflix shows. There very little of these as mentioned. The first episode of Class, which had special guest star Peter Capaldi, got relatively good viewers, topping the BBC Three chart. Peter Capaldi's casting was very likely to get the Who viewers interested. This was a mistake in part. Who viewers or a casual fans as opposed to proper fans wouldn't have known so therefore the casting wouldn't have attracted them. Also the "young adult" fans that were "too cool" for Doctor Who wouldn't have been that interested in the spin offs as they wouldn't know that it was different from Doctor Who and more inline with the sort of programme that they like.

However blaming the failure of the show on that is ignoring many facts. Of course the first episode did relatively well for a unknown online service. It topped the chart as I previously mentioned. Now the next thing that I think is a problem with the series is the poor scripts. This can be seen by the fact that the second episode of the 8 part series, which was released on the same day as the first, did not appear in the charts at all. Nor did the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th.

Critics seemed to think that the show was alright but the public seemed to disagree there. The BBC seemed to also agree. The BBC decided when moving BBC Three to online only that new programmes would eventually appear on BBC One. This of course included Class. Class appeared in January on the BBC, about 4 months after its initial release. It appears that the BBC had little faith in the series as it was port on the pre-news slot on a Monday night. Two episodes were also aired back to back which meant that one episode was on at 11.30. Any programme that airs after 10.30 is not really watched. Particularly Monday ones. The two episodes airing back to back also implies that BBC One wanted to get rid of the series as soon as possible. The show got very little viewers the average being about 300,000 which is nothing really for BBC One.

The story is a bit different in America. The series aired straight after Doctor Who in April and aired one a week. The series got about 1 million views, 2 million under the average for Doctor Who. It was the second best show for the channel after its parent show.

Any Class fans who were annoyed by BBC One's lack of faith in the programme were also joined by the showrunner and writer, Patrick Ness. It is unusual for a independent writer to write a Doctor Who spin off as both SAJ and TW were showrunned at first by an independent writer. Ness was so annoyed by this that he resigned from the show. Most shows that loose their showrunner die out. Only successful shows can continue like the great Doctor Who. Class looked like it was going through that door. And it did. BBC Three controller has decided to remove the show.

Patrick Ness promised a series that looked really intriguing. Weeping Angle civil war and the debut of their planet. All of these story ideas seem very interesting and intriguing to see a little more into the theology of the Weeping Angles. I wonder when that cliffhanger will be resolved, if at all it will. I thought as Fady Elysad, actor of Ram Singh has been contracted to Doctor Who the series finale of series 10 would be about the weeping angles but it was not. Now it looks like it wont be resolved, especially as Chibnall has no control over Class. (It's important to remember that Russel T Davies still had creative say over SJA and TW after his departure from the parent show). As much as the story seems exciting it is important to remember that Ness is very annoyed that his show was treated so appalling that he wanted fans to be upset over its cancellation. He was wrong.

In my opinion Class was not a very good series. I'm not however reeling in happiness over its cancellation. Most television series have a dud and it was unfortunate that Class was just one of those series. Rebels was the same but I did remain faithful to that show, which has now produced two more seasons that are very good. I am sad that the series will be forgotten but also I didn't particularly enjoy the first series at all and if it had nothing to do with Doctor Who then I wouldn't have watched it. And that line which I just said is crucial, in my opinion, for the cancellation of the series. If only the core-hard DW viewers were watching and that they were only watching for the sake of knowing everything DW related then therefore the series was a failure and that no casual viewers, them being the majority of the audience, were watching meant that the series had no point of continuing.

It does appear with the decision of a female lead for the first time in Doctor Who that the BBC have full faith that the programme will continue for at least another five years. But as the cat is out of the bag per say - but this metaphor meaning that the cat as escaped as opposed to being aware that it is there - would mean that the show doesn't really have anywhere to go to make it more creative. However back to the main focus - will autumn have a Doctor Who related content or will Spring. Well Spring is less likely as the should be filming right now. My theory is no. New Doctor, new showrunner, new start. Doctor Who related media on television is in hiatus until autumn 2018.

Other spin offs suggested is one featuring the Pastnasor Gang, which CBBC controller suggested to Steven Moffat in 2014, who then declined because he was too busy, is still a major possibility. However semi whovians or soft core fans won't watch that because its a "child's" show. A fifth series of Torchwood, or sixth if you count big finish (that would be a continuity nightmare about what you would call the series) is very much a popular move amongst fans and the cast. John Barrowman is a relatively famous global actor and he is interested enough to reprise the role that he publicly demonised Moffat over Jack not returning and regularly participates in the Big Finish audio dramas. John Barrowman's decision to leave Arrow, a DC Universe TV series, has sparked belief that Jack could be making a come back. I would love that but let's not start to catch the chickens before they've hatched.
