Ben and Polly Return to Doctor Who

In modern times companions return willy nilly, barely is it ever something unexpected. For companions from the classic series however it is a rarity, particularly  for them to appear in modern who. So far only Sarah Jane Smith has returned to in modern who so this is a special treat.

Jared Garfield and Lily Travers have been cast as Ben and Polly respectively.

For those who don't know Ben and Polly were the the first Doctor's final companions who travelled with him for three stories as well as a further six with his successor.

I doubt that Ben and Polly have a large role in the story but for the bits concerning the Tenth Planet they are necessary. It is also plausible that other Tenth Planet characters might return.

When the Bradley Walsh rumour came about I thought that he was rather old, not a bad thing of course, but companions don't tend to be. Let's have a look at the run down of the age of the regular actors in Doctor Who.

Favourites to be the New Companion in Doctor Who Series 11

Top Holders so far

17th July 2017-21st August 2017 = Kris Marshall
21st August 2017-NOW = Bradley Walsh

So far it appears that the bookies are fairly convinced that the new companion will be an older male.

However the early favourite for the 13th Doctor was a man and well, that didn't quite end up that way.

Kris Marshall is long rumoured to be in the series. After he announced that he was leaving Death in Paradise everyone jumped on the wagon to pronounce he was the Doctor. The Mirror reported that he was going to be the Doctor. Then Jodie was revealed. Marshall was now of course a companion. The Doctor Who rumours don't die for him.

Until yesterday,

The Mirror had that Bradley Walsh, who of course has worked with Chibnall before on Law and Order: UK is the new companion. Now the mirror tend to be about 50/50 when it comes to Doctor Who news on whether they are right or not. The most prominent information they have delivered was the Davros child spoiler and the David Bradley spoiler. The Sun were the John Simm spoilers. The Mirror have been wrong too though stating that Kris Marshall was the new Doctor. However they have made this RUMOUR their headline page. On the front cover! They must be fairly convinced.

Personally I love both of the two suggested. I really like their performances in Death in Paradise and Law and Order UK.

There is another rumour that Nardole will be the companion alongside Kris Marshall who the sun claims is the new companion.

Interesting...

"Hello There" - Obi Wan Film in 2020

Today it has been official confirmed by Lucasfilm that their third anthology film will be about the wonderful Obi Wan Kenobi, my favourite Star Wars Character.

Since the spin offs were announced Boba Fett has been the long running rumoured contender for one of these films. Then an Obi Wan Kenobi trilogy spung to mind in the rumour basket but was put  to bed by Lucasfilm. Obi Wan later joined Boba Fett for the prestigious position of rumour for the third spin off. Yoda also joined the scene some time later.

Kathleen Kennedy stated at Celebration IX that the film would be announced at D23 which was in early July but there was no information on that film at all or none on the Han Solo spin off, which recently gained a new director. This did cause panic for the Star Wars fan community that Lucasfilm were not confident on any of their ideas.

Then two days ago it was confirmed that the 2020 Spin Off film would be about Obi Wan Kenobi. Very little details on the film have actually been made including the lack of cast and the lack of a director. The fact that Ewan McGregor isn't mentioned does not mean that he is not the star of the show - it is still early days in production. The film could be set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and be set around Obi Wan in the desert but it could also be an origin story, however it could be argued that we have already seen enough back story for the character from the prequel trilogy.

There was also further news on the development of the series altogether. Future spin off films will be about Boba Fett, Yoda and Jabba the Hutt. When these will be released is unknown at the moment. Perhaps the delay for the announcement was merely Lucasfilm trying to decide what film to do next. Boba Fett has been long rumoured, Yoda too for a while and Jabba is a new addition altogether. I am curious about the decision to do a Han Solo, Fett and Jabba as the three have the same sort of background and no the same sort of people, including each other. Therefore it is interesting to see. As Episode IX is schedule  for 2019, Obi Wan for 2020 it is probable that the other three will arrive on 2021, 2022 and 2023 before the franchise has a break from film and perhaps arrives on television.

Stephen Daldrey is the rumoured director for the Obi Wan film. He is best known for being the director for the critically acclaimed Billy Elliot film.

The essential crew have also yet to be assembled but there are same names already confirmed for the 2020 spin off:

Producer: Kathleen Kennedy and Simon Kinberg
Screenplay: Simon Kinberg

Kathleen Kennedy - Chairman at Lucasfilm and there has had a few credentials to her name
The Force Awakens - Producer and Executive Producer
Rogue One - Producer and Executive Producer
The Last Jedi - Producer
Han Solo - Producer and Executive Producer
Episode IX - Producer and Executive Producer
Obi Wan - Producer

Simon Kinberg -
Star Wars Rebels Season 1 - Creator, Producer, Executive Producer, Story and Screenplay
Star Wars Rebels Season 2 - Creator, Producer, Executive Producer, Story and Screenplay
The Force Awakens - Producer
Star Wars Rebels Season 3 - Creator and Executive Producer
Star Wars Rebels Season 4 - Creator and Executive Producer
The Last Jedi - Producer
Han Solo - Screenplay
Obi Wan - Producer and Screenplay

However as the order of spin offs have changed so much it could be that Kinberg's film won't actually end up being the film that is released in 2020 as that was assumed to be the Boba Fett film

Doctor Who Series 11: Everything we know so far - August 2017

Contary to previous articles my thoughts are here too. As more details arrive my opinions will be removed.
Everything italics is pure speculation and rumour

For what we were aware in May click on the link

Knoweldge for Christmas

The 12th Doctor
1st Doctor
Bill Potts
The Captain - Mark Gattis - rumoured to be a Time Lord
TBA - Toby Whithouse
Polly - TBA
Ben Jackson
Mondasian Cybermen
Axons
Clara
Nardole

Regular Cast

13th Doctor - Jodie Whitaker
Companion - Kris Marshall
Nardole
Jack Harkness

The 13th Doctor has been confirmed to be a woman so a male companion is now rumoured. Kris Marshall, who was the bookies favourite to be the Doctor for the longest amount of time and the 2nd favourite the day before the announcement quickly became the favourite to be the new companion.

Nardole, who left at the end of the Doctor Falls and is also rumoured to appear in the Christmas Special this year, is now also rumoured to reprise his role as the secondary companion.

Pearl Mackie who left the show in the Doctor Falls but is already returning for a one off appearance this Christmas has confirmed that she will not reprise her role for Bill in Series 11

John Barrowman, who in the past has had "arguments" with Moffat through not letting him appear in Doctor Who again has suggested that as Chibnall has written a lot for Jack in the past we might see a return. Jack was previously rumoured to be the guest companion in the 2016 Christmas Special but it turned out to be Nardole.

Enemies

?
A lot of new monsters

Probably expect the Daleks because of the unconfirmed but obviously true contractually obligated return for the monsters. It has also been stated that Chibnall wants to have a lot more new monsters and doesn't want to rely on the old favourites. Hinchcliffe also had this view and he is seen as the most successful showrunner in a lot of Whovians' eyes.

Episodes

8 1 hour episodes to air on a Sunday and no Christmas Special of one continuous story

A lot of rumours for this one. First is that the series will be 8 episodes long as opposed to 12 we have had for the past 3 series. Those series had already been cut from the 13 that we had seen in the first 7 series of the modern era. Lengths of series have always changed so this is possible. Chibnall went with the same format with Broadchurch so again it is even more likely. His explanation of "risk and boldness" also supports these radical decisions

Doctor Who is not shy of 1 hour episodes, adopting it for every Christmas Special par 2007 since 2005 and for the Easter, November specials in 2009 and the Series 8 and 10 series finales. 1 hour has never been the de facto length of the series yet. 25 minutes was the original length for every series in the classic series accept for Season 22 and 45 minutes has been the standard length for every episode of the modern era. This would be a major change for the show but it could work. As nowadays most stories are individual episodes a lot of fans say that a story cannot be told successfully with such a short length. The 1 hour decision is something many fans would want.

Doctor Who has never aired on a Sunday unless it falls at Christmas or for the Easter Special in 2009. Doctor Who has been seen as a Saturday night event for a long time for a lot of people. The main series itself has aired on a Saturday from Season 1-18, 22-23 and all 10 of the modern era. The Sunday slot is the prime slot to drama, where both Victoria and Poldark currently reside. Doctor Who has always been unique for the being one of the few Sci-Fi Dramas out there, so this is a slot Doctor Who has never been honoured with before, from this perspective. However the Saturday timeslot is beak Television all together so it could be said that a move to Sunday is actually a down-path. It's like a football player being moved to the top team of another country instead of remaining in the overall team of a better country (not that I watch or know much about Football).

The Christmas Special rumour came about after Steven Moffat's "saving grace" speech that he gave recently. We already know that Moffat decided to do the the tenth series after his original exit story in the Husbands of River Song because the BBC's planned successor, who had at first turned them down, was not ready because of Broadchurch. Moffat new the fans would not like a two year wait so decided that he would do the tenth series. Moffat has now stated that he and 12 were both meant to leave at the series finale, hence the Doctor's death in that episode despite the fact he is in the Christmas episode this year. Chibnall did not want to start his tenure with a Christmas Special so Moffat decided he would write that one as well. This is all due to the fact that Moffat thought that if Doctor Who lost its slot at Christmas, even for one year, it might not ever return due to the sheer number of programmes on that day. The honour of Doctor Who having a Christmas Special, the day were most tele is ever watch therefore keeping Doctor Who in the public eye, was something Moffat did not want to see happening so said he would write it. This has therefore led to rumours that the Chibnall is planning to scrap the Christmas Special altogether.

It is also rumoured that the whole series will be under the same story. Whether or not this will be done like Key to Time, as an umbrella story, or as Trail of a Time Lord, a proper feature length episode is unknown. This is has largely come from Chris Chibnall not being against such an idea. The nearest in my opinion for this in new who is Series 6.

One large rumour is that Murray Gold is leaving Doctor Who after 10 years, one of the only few people left from the very beginning

Writers

Mark Gattis originally stated that he would like to return but now says that he has no plans to and his script for Series 10 certainly seems to have everything he likes in it (Victorians and Ice Warriors) which could mean it is his swansong. I believe this is because Chibnall wants the show to be new and his writing room style of writing which is rumoured might not want to have the shadow of Moffat with them, which unfortunately is Gattis because he had a large involvement with Moffat's time on the show.

Certain writers have experessed their views:

Mark Gatiss: “I think Chris [Chibnall] has got an entirely new writing team. I don’t think anyone knows any details, which is kind of exciting!”
Phil Ford: “Obviously, I would jump at doing more Doctor Who.”
Catherine Tregenna: “I would absolutely love to get involved again. It was, and still is, a great experience. I’d definitely write [an episode] again… if they’d have me back!”
Neil Gaiman: “Now I’m just sort of hoping that I can get one done while Peter Capaldi is still the Doctor, because it would be a very sad thing if I lost my chance to write for a grumpy, Scottish Doctor.”
Gareth Roberts: “I’d love to see William Russell back [as Ian Chesterton] in the show! That’s so rich and so fertile for someone to do. You’d have to explain it enough so that everyone would get it.”
Neil Cross: “There’s a whole bunch of stuff I want to do.”
