The Eaters of the Light is the 10th Episode of the main run of Series 10. It features a cameo appearance off Missy. This is the first episode proper of the modern era to be written by a classic series writer.
Well first things first. My GCSE's are over!
Yes, yes they are.
This episode was alright but I think what makes this episode so special, as the above says, is that this is the first episode of the modern era written by a classic series writer. This episode did feel 7th Doctor ish just like the last episode felt a little 1st Doctor ish. Rona is jokingly known as the writer that 'killed' Doctor Who as she wrote the last script of the classic series. She is back and done an okay job.
Pros
Back to Basics - Like last week this episode felt like it was back to basics. This series does tend to fell basic. Which is not a bad thing.
Cons
The Crows - I didn't get this bit. Weird
Doctor a tad mean - Now I'm all for a grumpy Doctor but I think the Doctor was a bit to harsh on Kar.
Due to the nature of the 'basic' episodes of this series I am struggling to come up with many more Pros and Cons. Here is the type of review that long time readers are more used too.
Doctor Rating
12th Doctor: 9/10 - I know that I did critise the Doctor for being grumpy but he was good in this
Companion Rating
Bill Potts: 8/10 - For the first time of a rewatch of this series (baring in mind this is my 6th episode on re-watch this series) I preferred her on the second watch
Nardole: 7/10 - Perfectly okay and funny but didn't do much as usual.
Enemy Rating
Light Locus: 7/10 - An interesting new idea but again just a little weird.
Story Rating
Story: 7/10
Scariness: 7/10 - Sometimes I did fear for the soldiers
Seriousness: 8/10 - The whole universe was at stake!
Humour: 8/10
Continuity: 7/10 - For the achievement of Rona's return this episode gets a good score but the fact that the Doctor kept changing his mind about looking for Bill was a tad annoying.
Total: 37/50
Rest of Cast
Karr: 7/10
Ban: 7/10
Lucies: 7/10
Simon: 7/10
The issue for this series as a whole I feel is the lack of individuality of the extras. This is what causes this series to largely remain in the same section of the overall result
94/130
1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%
6. Oxygen = 73.07%
7. Extremis = 80.77%
8. The Pyramid at the End of the World = 78%
9. The Lie of the Land = 70%
10. Empress of Mars = 75.33%
11. The Eaters of the Light = 72.30%
Eaters of the Light is again in the small section of 70-75%. This is where it sort of sits with me. According to this Eaters of the Light is my 8th favourite episode so does fit in the lower belt. I think this is pretty fair
1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%
6. Oxygen = 73.07%
7. Extremis/The Pyramid at the End of the World/The Lie of the Land = 76.26%
8. Empress of Mars = 75.33%
9. The Eaters of the Light = 72.30%
Again Eaters of the Light fits in the lower half, placing in 7th place.
Return of the Doctor Mysterio: 7/10
The Pilot: 7/10
Smile: 6/10
Thin Ice: 6/10
Knock Knock: 7/10
Oxygen: 8/10
Extremis: 8/10
Pyramid at the End of the World: 8/10
Lie of the Land: 7/10
Empress of Mars: 7/10
The Eaters of the Light: 7/10
Another 7, although I'm pretty certain this will change in time.
