For the first time that Doctor Who has been eligible* for an NTA it hasn't been nominated in neither of the two categories it could be nominated in: Best Drama and Best Drama Performance**
*Only 2005- onward with the exception of the 2017 NTAs (for the 2016 year) where Doctor Who as a series did not exist
** Since the show is eligible the Best Drama Performance category has changed. From 2005-2007 there was a separate male and female category and for the years 2008-2011 there was a general category before going back to separate awards for 2012-2013 and back again to a general from 2014

Now obviously we all no that Doctor Who was certainly in its heyday during the Russel T Davies era and returned to that position briefly in the 50th year. When the show came back it swooped every category. David Tennant as a new face was not off putting for the audience who voted him the best actor in his first year. Billie Piper's departure as Rose was upsetting for many and it is clear that Freema Agyeman's Martha had a tough time but still managed to get nominated. In the 2008 year Doctor Who had one every best Drama every year it could and it did again in 2008. This was the first year with a shared best Drama Performance over a separate actor and actress category. Doctor Who got two of the four nominations (the most it could) with David Tennant securing another win but also showing how popular Catherine Tate was at Donna and clearly showing that if there was a separate category for actor and actress she would have undoubtedly would have been in with an incredibly good chance of winning it. The 2009 year saw no companion so David Tennant entered the best Drama Performance on his on and won just like the show. 2010 was a clear change for the show. Russel T Davies had left at the control of the programme and popular David Tennant had also left. This clearly left the TV audience unhappy as for the first time Doctor Who did not win best Drama but it still got nominated. Matt Smith didn't win, becoming the first Doctor not to but was still nominated and for the first time a companion was not nominated, however it was harder for Karen to be nominated than it was for Billie and Freema as it was a shared category. In 2011 the changes had began to sink in and although Doctor Who didn't win again, both Matt Smith and Karen Gillian won best actor and actress, the first time this had happened since 2006. In 2012 the show didn't win again and was only nominated, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were nominated but didn't win. Then came the anniversary year, 2013. The show won best Drama again, the first time since 2009 and Matt Smith won best actor for the second time of 4 possibilities. Jenna Coleman did not get nominated as Clara however. 2014 saw another new Doctor who had to convince viewers he was up to scratch. 2014 saw the show return to its nominated position and for the first time in the NTA history a Doctor nor companion were nominated. Unfortunately unlike Matt Smith it appears that Peter's Doctor didn't sink in as 2015 was the same tale. This also unfortunately meant that Jenna Coleman's Clara was the first companion who could be nominated who wasn't. In 2017, the one that is about to happen soon, Doctor Who was not nominated for any category it could be nominated in. This is the first time this has happened.
It is clear that Peter Capaldi was not a popular Doctor to the general TV audience, despite being a great success for the fans. He was the first not to be nominated and unfortunately his unpopularity did mean for the first time in the show's history that Doctor Who has not been nominated. Let's hope that the new Female Doctor can encourage new faces who will vote for the obvious best show on television, Doctor Who.
Of course NTAs are voted for by the people but what do the critics think of the show
In the BAFTAs for the 1976 and 1977 year Doctor Who won the best Entertainment award. They were the only awards given to the series in the classic era.
In the modern era Doctor Who has been more successful. Please note that the nominations for the 2017 year have not yet been announced and for 2016 it was not applicable for not having a series
