Doctor Who Series 10 Reviews #9: The Lie of the Land

The Lie of the Land by Toby Whithouse

The Lie of the Land is the final part of the three part story that started with Extremis. It features a reappearance of Missy.

Well after the impressive build up this episode really had to conclude the story well and quite frankly it didn't. Please observe below my thoughts.

Doctor Rating

12th Doctor: 8/10 - Acting as always superb but I thought it was very out of character of the Doctor to do a fake regeneration on Bill - even if it was a test.

Companion Rating

Bill Potts: 7/10 - Unbelievable and not the normal standard of excellent acting that we are used to for Pearl. Bill shooting the Doctor is out of character and she didn't seem to shocked when he survived - or angry for that  matter
Nardole: 7/10 - Nardole didn't do much and wasn't that funny - it can really be seen that he wasn't meant to be in this episode when it was originally written.

Enemy Rating

The Monks: 6/10 - After weeks of build up of such an excellent and dangerous monster the monks don't do much. Surely in all the simulations they did they could have worked out the Doctor could access the Pyramid. Shame, real shame.

Story Ratings

Story: 6/10 - Real shame as really liked the two previous episodes. This one seemed to be a rip off of the Last of the Time Lords but done in a bit more of a shody way. Missy was shoe-horned in and the whole thing felt a little too easy. I din't like the fake regeneration or the easy way that the Monks left.
Seriousness: 9/10 - The Monks have taken over and have a militia but due to the fact we didn't see too much of what they have actually done then I can't give the full 10/10.
Scariness: 8/10 - It was scary at places I do admit. However I wasn't scared about either Bill or the Doctor's "death" because I knew that they would survive because we see them in future trailers.
Humour: 6/10 - The episode had funny moments but wasn't particularly funny.
Continuity: 7/10 - It was nice to see some references to the past but I have to say quite frankly that I did not like Nardole being all for seeing Missy despite his aggressive nature in previous episodes.
Total: 36/50

Rest of Cast

Missy: 6/10 - Really sorry to give her such a low score but I have to say that she just felt a little weird here - I couldn't put my figure on it. Perhaps it is because this is the first proper scene of Missy that is not written by Moffat.

Total: 70/100

1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%
6. Oxygen = 73.07%
7. Extremis = 80.77%
8. The Pyramid at the End of the World = 78%
9. The Lie of the Land = 70%

In terms of episodes the Lie of the Land is a low one - the lowest of the series so far. I would not agree with score because I find the principle better than Thin Ice and Smile so I would rank it above them episodically but definitely below the others.

1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%
6. Oxygen = 73.07%
7. Extremis/The Pyramid at the End of the World/The Lie of the Land = 76.26%

Luckily the disappointing final part does not effect the overall position of the three parter, placed at the top of the leader board. I would disagree with this placing the three parter in second place behind Oxygen.

Return of the Doctor Mysterio: 7/10
The Pilot: 7/10
Smile: 6/10
Thin Ice: 6/10
Knock Knock: 7/10
Oxygen: 8/10
Extremis: 8/10
Pyramid at the End of the World: 8/10
Lie of the Land: 7/10

Next week a new story, something we haven't had in a while.
See you...
