Doctor Who Series 10 Reviews #12: World Enough and Time

World Enough and Time by Steven Moffat

World Enough and Time is the first part of the 9th story of the main run of series 10 or Season 36. It features the 17th appearance of the Cybermen and 26th story to feature the Master. It is Missy's 4th story in a main appearance and 10th overall, and it is the Saxon's Master's 3rd story. This episode is the first mulit-master story in the show's history and also features the first appearance of the original Mondasian Cybermen from The Tenth Planet. It features the beginning of the 12th Doctor's regeneration.

I have to say that episode was very good as I will continue to say throughout my review. I have a huge problem with it however. The cliffhanger was ruined by the fact we already new that it was going to happen. I can't wait for future reactors who don't know about Simm's return to see their reaction as it would be what I wanted mine to be

Pros

Multi-Master - This idea is a long time coming and hopefully will work very well.

Creepy Cybermen - When I started watching Doctor Who back when I was 3 years old I was always very scared of the Cybermen - far more than the Daleks. Like the Daleks, the Cybermen have lost their fear factor until this episode

Original Story - This story is one of the very few original ones this series, many seem to be a rehash of previous stories.

Gruesome end to a companion - If this is Bill's exit, which I sincerely hope Moffat wont do a Clara than this is a horrible but yet the great way for a short-time popular companion to go.

The Master and the Doctor as Childhood Friends - I really liked that discussion between the Doctor and Bill. Really showed the depth of relationship between the Doctor and the Master

Regeneration Risk - Now I don't tend to like risks but if this one pays off it will be thoroughly enjoyable. Interesting that this was filmed two weeks prior to broadcast. That hints that it was no cop-out regeneration but genuine. The snow landscape looks like it could tie in with the Christmas Special and the rumour that attaches it - David Bradley playing the first doctor.

Cons

Spoilers - I think that would have gone down as one of the best cliffhangers in the show's history if we weren't aware of it already. I guessed that Razor was the Master from his first appearance. Real shame that the Cybermen were spoilt too. The episode seemed to have been written, directed and edited to build up the cliffhanger however it seemed a little too pointless because we already knew the outcome

Nardole - Now I love Nardole. I think he brings great humour to the show. However in a lot of episodes (in fact all of them bar Extremis) it is incredibly obvious that he isn't wasn't there in the first draft of the script. He does literally nothing which is a huge shame. Nardole will probably go at the end of the series or at Christmas and will feel utterly pointless - which is a shame for such a likeable and funny character.

Doctor Rating

12th Doctor: 10/10 - Great emotion and his desire to find Bill by asking the Cyberman was perfect.

Companion Rating

Bill Potts: 9/10 - Great acting, especially the reaction to the pain of the semi-converted cybermen.
Nardole: 7/10 - As previously mentioned not a lot to do.
Missy: 8/10 - Good but I was annoyed by the "Doctor Who" and I thought she wasn't in it enough despite the fact this story is supposed to about her.
Total: 24/30

Enemy Rating

The Master: 8/10 - This is a shame but I have to knock a point off for the fact his reveal was spoilt and a point that we didn't see him enough. Next week I am hoping for a 10/10
The Cyberrmen: 9/10 - I would have given a 10 if it hadn't been spoilt. You can tell how annoyed I am. But they were smashing and very scary.

Story Notes

Story: 9/10 - As mentioned a great original idea
Seriousness: 10/10 - How more serious can you get from the companion being converted into a cyberman
Scariness: 10/10 - I actually felt scared - a lot more than I have for a very long time in Doctor Who.
Humour: 7/10 - There was a bit off odd humour here and there but nothing too special
Continuity: 9/10 - Great. Two Masters. Original cybermen. Just a loss for little details. If it is true that the Modasian cybermen are going to fly I assure you next week will see a low score.
Total: 45/50

Rest of Cast

Jorj: 8/10 - A good guest cast member
Nurse: 8/10 - Creepy and scary woman
Surgeon: 8/10 - Excellent casting choice

Total: 120/140

1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%
6. Oxygen = 73.07%
7. Extremis = 80.77%
8. The Pyramid at the End of the World = 78%
9. The Lie of the Land = 70%
10. Empress of Mars = 75.33%
11. The Eaters of the Light = 72.30%
12. World Enough and Time = 85.71%

Well that smashed the rest out of the park didn't it. The second episode to cross the 80 barrier and was even close to the 90 barrier than the 80 one. Right there at the top. Impressive, Mr Moffat, I didn't expect this.

1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%
5. Knock Knock = 74.29%
6. Oxygen = 73.07%
7. Extremis/The Pyramid at the End of the World/The Lie of the Land = 76.26%
8. Empress of Mars = 75.33%
9. The Eaters of the Light = 72.30%
10. World Enough and  Time = 85.71%

World Enough and Time is not complete yet as story and my prediction is next week's wont be as good because it has tough competition. However as a story it is safely at the top, almost 10% higher than second place, the Monk Trilogy.

Return of the Doctor Mysterio: 7/10
The Pilot: 7/10
Smile: 6/10
Thin Ice: 6/10
Knock Knock: 7/10
Oxygen: 8/10
Extremis: 8/10
Pyramid at the End of the World: 8/10
Lie of the Land: 7/10
Monk Trilogy: 8/10
Empress of Mars: 7/10
The Eaters of the Light: 6/10 (-1)
World Enough and Time: 9/10

World Enough and Time secures the first nine for me since Heaven Sent, which I recently changed to a 9. However I am not so excited by it as I was in Series 9 with the Zygon two-parter because if next week's episode is as big off a let down as Hell Bent was than the 9 for the final two-part finale may not be. I have also changed Eaters of the Light to a 6 because it did no means equal the other 7s in this series.
