Doctor Who Series 10 Reviews #4: Thin Ice

Thin Ice by Sarah Dollard

Thin Ice is the third episode of the tenth series proper of the new series of Doctor Who and of the 36th Season of Doctor Who as a whole. The episode marks the first time Bill Potts has been to the past proper.

Sarah Dollard was highly critically acclaimed for her last year's contribution to the show, Face the Raven. Thin Ice did not have a compulsory conclusion like Face the Raven did so it allowed Thin Ice a bit more of a wiggle room. Series 10 is very similar to the quality of series 3 in my mind. Every episode is not bad but it isn't really stand out either. This episode was about the same level as last weeks in my mind, but perhaps just a tad better. I of course have to talk about the scene with the vault at the end. The vault is very intriguing in my opinion and is far better plot thread than last series'. I love how the Doctor has a mystery about him that was undone after the resolution of the Time War.

Pros

The Human Villainy - This episode does show that it is humankind that are evil on occasion, not just aliens
Bill realising the Doctor is a killer - Sarah Dollard does write a good dark Doctor and she certainly wrote him well here
The Doctor's speech - A lot of people love Capaldi or any Doctor for that matter's speeches. I for one have never been a huge fan of them but I do have to say that this one was nice and short and good. One thing that let in down was that it some how felt to be that Dollard was including observations of the speech in her script so that we can observe them the way she wants us too at home.

Cons

The Applause of the Doctor's Speech - See above
Plot redone - The script was a copy of the Beast Below but in past times, which is slightly concerning that we have yet another episode that reuses other story's ideas

Doctor Rating

12th Doctor: 9/10 - As mentioned aboved, Dollard does write good for Capaldi. A good mix on who the Doctor is - funny but is willing for some level of bad things to happen to get an ultimate good.

Companion Rating

Bill Potts: 8/10 - On first watch I would have given her a 9 but after rewatch some of her dialogue is a little annoying, which is why she is at an 8.

Enemy Rating

Lord Sutcliffe: 7/10 - If we saw him earlier and got time to hate him more than the score would be higher because I love seeing humans that are evil.

Story Notes

Story: 6/10 - I have to give it this score because of how it is a copy of the Beast Below
Scariness: 6/10 - I didn't feel frightened at all really for this episode
Seriousness: 7/10 - A child was eaten and death did occur but I wasn't particularly angry with Lord Sutcliffe which I should have been.
Continuity: 6/10 - Didn't offer any references of such apart from just hand down copying
Humour: 8/10 - There were good humour moments, I particularly liked Nardole's line about tea and coffee.

Rest of Cast

Kitty: 7/10 - A good child actress. The rest were less impressive but weren't in it enough for me to give a score.
Overseer: 8/10 - An excellent humorous moment of the script and a good actor as well.

Total: 73/100

1. Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 72%
2. The Pilot = 74%
3. Smile = 71.66%
4. Thin Ice = 73%

I think this is an accurate score to certain level. I think I preferred the Christmas special to Thin Ice though.

Score out of 10

Return of the Doctor Mysterio = 7/10
The Pilot = 7/10
Smile = 6/10 (-1)
Thin Ice = 7/10
