Doctor Who Series 10 Review #2: The Pilot

The Pilot by Steven Moffat

The Pilot is the first episode of the main run of Series 10. It features the first appearance of companion Bill Potts. It features the return of the Daleks and Movellans in a cameo role and features the first appearance of the mysterious volt

Now Series 10 appears to be a light hearted series - one that I enjoy. Don't get me wrong I loved last series, it was full of continuity nods, not to say that this wasn't because this episode had a fantastic balance of old and new. When I heard that Moffat wanted to start the show anew I was a little shocked, especially as Chibnall is taking over next year with a brand new series with a brand new Doctor and probably a brand new logo, title sequence, TARDIS, Sonic screwdriver and companion. Light hearted episodes are very difficult to score and that has been the problem for the last three episodes of Doctor Who. They are very funny and enjoyable at first time viewing but over time the episode may decrease especially when the actual story is a little weak. This is what makes Doctor Who does so well, lots of different episodes, the lovely ones, the scary ones, the timey-winey ones and the big blockbuster ones. I am also highly intrigued by the vault as it bring mystery to the Doctor as well - the best mystery I think of the Moffat era apart from the Series 6 arc but that was over done.

Pros

The Companion Reveal - Episodes that introduce companions are smashing - I love them - full of all the references of bigger on the inside and Time and Relative Dimension in Space. I was annoyed with the Doctor What because it has been done before and I just want a Doctor Who again, I love it.

The Simplistic Nature - Self explanatory

Showing what the TARDIS can do - We see it go to all manners of places.

A Companion is more stupid than the Doctor - Clara seemed very on par with the Doctor which I didn't like, Bill isn't

Nods to the past but new in the future - Perfect balance. I loved the Movellan cameo

Mystery - The Doctor is mysterious, like he is supposed to be.

Cons

Repetition of Story - Travelling through time chased by a creature is not new, nor is water being a threat or the repeating of dialogue or solving it all through love or a space ship needing someone who wanted to leave.

Sonic Screwdriver - I didn't like the pot of scewdrivers, I thought it was silly and not something that would happen.

Some of the Nardole jokes - Nardole was funny and I wouldn't say pointless because this episode is supposed to feature Bill as the lead. I was not a fan of them bringing back but he is here now and that's fine. He brings humour. However the one joke I didn't like - despite laughing - is when he went the wrong way. He would have been to the vault before so I didn't think that made much sense but there we go.

Doctor Rating

12th Doctor - 8/10 - This epioode was not about him but he had excellent perky moments and different to the Matt Smith sort of Doctor.

Companions

Nardole - 7/10 - Pleasant but had no real purpose to have a higher score
Bill - 9/10 - Really good introduction to the character but not full marks because there wasn't anything particularly dramatic to get the 10/10 score - something I doubt Nardole will ever get.

Enemy Rating

Sentient Puddle - 7/10 - Another thing to get afraid of which is good but not new

Story Rating

Story - 6/10 - A simplistic one and not anything that has been done before. The story itself though isn't as important as introducing Bill, which was done very well.
Scariness - 8/10 - Not meant to be scary but there were lots of moments that did make me jump
Seriousness - 6/10 - It wasn't anything particularly serious or too threatening.
Continuity - 9/10 - Done really well but as seen above there were things I wasn't keen off.
Humour - 8/10 - Generally very funny but it wasn't meant to be a comedy episode. The episode therefore can't go higher than 9 for that sense and some bits I wasn't keen off as above says so therefore it gets the appropriate score above.
Total: 37/50

Rest of Cast

Moira - 6/10 - Didn't do much

Total: 74/100

1. The Return of the Doctor Myserio - 72%
2. The Pilot - 74%

The Pilot was a good episode and I do agree with the above because it was better than the Christmas Special currently but they were about even.

Rating: 7/10
