Film Reviews #4: World War Z

World War Z by Mathew Michael Carnahan, Drew Goddard, Damon Lindelof and J Michael Straczynski

My first film review that isn't a Star Wars film.

Primary Cast

Gerry Lane: 8/10 - You do want him to live but he isn't the most fascinating of characters
Karen Lane: 6/10 - She doesn't do much so she can't get any higher
Segen: 7/10 - A Good character but that is it. Just good.
Total: 21/30

Secondary Cast

Thierrry Umutoni: 6/10 - Again he doesn't really do much.
Constance Lane: 6/10 - She is all right as a child actor.
Rachel Lane: 5/10 - She isn't in it as much and isn't given enough to do.
Total: 17/30

Enemy Rating

Zombies: 9/10 - Very good but they lose a point because it isn't an original idea.

Story Rating

Story: 8/10 - Good story but it has been done before.
Seriousness: 10/10 - Couldn't get more serious than a disaster film.
Scariness: 10/10 - The zombies were creepy.
Humour: 2/10 - Not what they were going for here so that is why I have given them the benefit of the doubt.
Continuity: 7/10 - There were a few things that I didn't understand throughout.
Total: 37/50

Total: 84/120

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi - 90.00%
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens - 86.47%
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back - 92.50%
World War Z - 70.00%

So World War Z becomes my least favourite film so far. However it was against Star Wars films so it was going to badly. It was a good film.

Doctor Who Series 9 Review #14: The Husbands of River Song

The Husbands of River Song by Steven Moffat

First of all I would like to let you know that I was unaware until recently that this Christmas special counts towards series 9 rather than series 10, in which it would usually be included in. Therefore I will do an updated list of series 9 scores at the end of the review. Also my new Series 9 average will be down at the bottom as well.

This episode marks the return of River Song and the mention of Jim the Fish. This is also is likely to be the last to feature that character.

I thought I would hate this episode but it was a lot better than expected. Here are my Pros and Cons of the episode.

Pros

The Humour - The humour wasn't the greatest but it was good and I did laugh.

No Kissing - This shouldn't count but I was really worried that River and the Doctor would kiss but they did not

Wrapping up River - Another thing that I was worried about was the fact that River was back even though they had finished off before in a pretty weird way. I thought that if she would have returned she would have appeared in series 8 so as she didn't I thought that we definitely said goodbye to her in series 7. But they did finish her in a good way.

Cons

The Story - The story isn't great but it can be ignored as is Christmas.

Doctor Rating

12th Doctor - 8/10

He way very good at the end so I would move it up but as he was saying silly jokes before that suited out of character.

Companion Rating

River Song - 8/10

I thought I certainly wouldn't like her but she was good.

Enemy Rating

King Hydroflax - 6/10
Scratch - 7/10
Flemming - 8/10
Total: 21/30

King Hydroflax isn't great as he is just a head but his body was alright. Scratch didn't do much so I can't give him high credit. I did like Flemming.

Story Rating

Story: 6/10
Seriousness: 5/10
Scariness: 6/10
Humour: 10/10
Continuity: 8/10
Total: 31 /50

Rest of Cast

Nardole: 10/10
Ramone: 7/10

Film Review #3: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire Strikes Back by George Lucas, Lawrence Kasden and Leigh Brackett

My next film review is another Star Wars film, this time The Empire Strikes Back which is generally believed to be the best Star Wars film and in some polls (Empire Magazine 2015) the best film of all time. I think it is a great film as it is Star Wars but in my opinion it is not the best.

Primary Characters

Luke Skywalker: 8/10 - Luke is like Leia perfectly fine but he could have been better
Han Solo: 10/10 - Brilliant as always. Excellent ad-lipping
Leia Organa: 8/10 - Perfectly well acted but not her best performance which is A New Hope
Total: 26/30

Secondary Characters

Lando Calrissian: 9/10 - Lando is great. No wonder Billy Dee Williams auditioned for the role of Han Solo.
C 3P0: 10/10 - Really annoying, which is perfect
R2 D2: 10/10 - R2 D2 is R2 D2 so it can't go any lower than full marks
Chewbacca: 10/10 - Any Creature that doesn't speak are always the ones that makes me like them.
Yoda: 10/10 - Far better here than in the Prequel Trilogy. It is also great that he is mad but powerful.
Total: 49/50

Enemy Rating

Darth Vader: 10/10 - The Dark Lord of the Sith is excellent.
Boba Fett: 10/10 - In this episode you can believe that he really is the best bounty hunter in the galaxy
Stormtroopers: 9/10 - They don't hit anyone but in this instalment they are a menace.
Total: 29/30

Story Rating

Story: 8/10 - Perfectly fine story but nothing really happens in the middle of it.
Scariness: 8/10 - Not really scary but more creepy with Darth Vader
Seriousness: 10/10 - One of the heroes is taken away at the end. You can't get more serious.
Humour: 8/10 - Good humour in places
Continuity: 10/10 - Completely fine in terms of keeping things to how they should be.
Total: 44/50

Total: 148/160

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi - 90.00%
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens - 86.47%
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back - 92.50%

So it turns out it is my favourite on this scale. Very good result getting the highest result so far. They are all Star Wars films at the moment but later on when there are different films they will be much lower, I presume

Star Wars: Rank the Saga (UPDATED 2015)

A year and a half ago I did my Star Wars Countdown. It has changed since then and of course we do have a new edition to the saga.

1. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - This is just an awesome episode of the Star Wars saga and full of action throughout. Hardly a dull moment.

2. Episode VI: Return of the Jedi - This is great throughout without a dull moment. The reason why it is second is because none of it is above great.

3. Episode IV: A New Hope - The one that started it all off. I believe this one to have the best story and the most intrigue out of all of them.

4. Episode VII: The Force Awakens - The most recent edition to the Star Wars Saga. Very humorous and has a good story but too similar to A New Hope.

5. Episode II: Attack of the Clones - This has one of the best moments of the Star Wars Saga which is the last half an hour. However the majority of the rest of the film is just boring.

6. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back - My most controversial choice due to its popularity. I just find that this one doesn't really have a story behind it. It is good in all of categories however.

7. Episode I: The Phantom Menace - This may be the worst of the Star Wars Saga but it is still a good film. I just think that the story isn't that interesting and nor are the characters.

So they we have my new and updated Star Wars movie order.

Film Review #2: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)

The Force Awakens by JJ Abrahams, Lawrence Kasden, Michael Ardnt and George Lucas

The moment came two nights a go when I saw the latest instalment in the Star Wars Saga. It is was very good

Pros

Humour - This film was full of humour from start to finish

Good Mix of old and new - A Very good mix with new characters and the old.

Smuggling Life - We got to see what Han Solo gets up to when Smuggling which was nice.

Cons

Reuse of Plot - The whole thing was very similar to A New Hope. Too Similar. It was likely they were playing it safe by doing something they know was a success before.

Forgetting of the Prequels - The Prequels weren't the best in most people's eyes but they shouldn't have ignored them in they way they did. For example they could have used Coruscant instead of Hosnian Prime.

Unexplained Background - A lot of unanswered questions. However these good be answered in later instalments.

Primary Cast

Rey: 9/10 - Rey was very good at showing that she is a better fighter than Finn. She was able to wield a Lightsaber too easily though.
Finn: 9/10 - Finn was good but suffered the same issue as Rey.
Poe Dameron: 9/10 - Poe wasn't in it enough to get the whole 10/10 marks. From what we saw of him however is was good.
Total: 27/30

Secondary Cast

Han Solo: 9/10 - First film that I wouldn't give him full marks. This is because at first he was a bit wooden. He later picked up however.
Chewbacca: 10/10 - Chewie was excellent in terms of humour. His reaction (Spoilers) for Han Solo's death was particularly good.
BB-8: 9/10 - A Great character but a bit to similar to R2 D2
General Leia Organa: 7/10 - Leia wasn't the greatest at all. Her worst film as of yet. Very wooden in parts.
Total: 35/40

Enemy Rating

Kylo Ren: 9/10 - Good with his mask on but off not so much.
General Hux: 8/10 - Fine but he didn't really shine. He also didn't give any sense of power.
Supreme Leader Snoke: 9/10 - He just sat on his chair and he wasn't explained well. He did look scary and threatening however.
Captain Phasma: 6/10 - Only really gets points for the good armour.
Stormtroopers: 9/10 - Nearly hitting everything they meet (nearly).
Total: 41/50

Story Rating

Story: 9/10 - Still a good story but too similar to A New Hope.
Seriousness: 9/10 - With the humour in it so much the seriousness lacked. Picked up the seriousness again when (Spoilers) Han Solo died.
Scariness: 8/10 - There were quite a lot of scary moments but it wasn't centre stage.
Humour: 10/10 - The funniest Star Wars yet.
Continuity: 8/10 - Quite a few plot wholes and unexplained events. For example Poe Dameron escaping the crash and leaving his jacket.
Total: 44/50

147/170

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi: 90.00%
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens: 86.47%

This is a great score so even though it takes the bottom spot of my short list it is still very high. It should be proud to so so well. Certainly one of  the best films of all time.

Film Review #1: Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)

Return of the Jedi by George Lucas and Lawrence Kasden

On Friday I went to see The Force Awakens so to prepare my self for that I watched Return of the Jedi the film that predeceases The Force Awakens.

Pros

Pacing - The pacing in this film is one of the best in the whole Saga. It is never dull. Some bits are more exciting than others but none of it is dull.

The Battle of Endor - The Battle of Endor is the best space battle and also has a good land battle too.

Seeing life outside of the war - I always like to see the Star Wars Galaxy outside of the rebellion and the empire and this film does it for quite a while with Jabba's Palace

Cons

The Death Star - A reused idea, but it would make sense that they would do another one and the way the go about to destroy it is different from A New Hope

Comic Relief - The Ewoks in my opinion are great but the film uses comedic elements just by something serious which doesn't always work well.

Primary Cast

Luke Skywalker: 9/10 - Luke is mysterious and very good as a Jedi Master. The acting also picks up
Han Solo: 10/10 - Han Solo is as brilliant as ever.
Leia Organa: 8/10 - Perfectly good but just not great, this is perhaps her worst of the trilogy.
Total: 27/30

Secondary Cast

Lando Calrissian: 9/10 - Lando is good but just isn't given a lot to do.
C-3P0: 10/10 - C 3P0 is really good as playing the God of the Ewoks
Chewbacca: 10/10 - Are cute and cuddly friend does a fine job once more.
R2 D2: 10/10 - R2 is R2 so you can't really fault him.
Total: 39/40

Enemy Rating

Darth Vader: 9/10 - Doesn't really do much throughout the film except talk and fight with his lightsaber at the end.
Emperor Palpatine: 10/10 - I know I just complained about Darth Vader talking a lot but it does suit Emperor Palpatine
Jabba the Hutt: 10/10 - The fact that a slug can be in charge of so many people I think is an excellent idea.
Stormtroopers: 7/10 - The foot soldiers are all right but this is their worst in the saga. Counting Scout troopers gives them the '7' score.
Total: 36/40

Story Rating

Story: 9/10 - Only because of the re use of the Death Star
Seriousness: 9/10 - Can't get the full ten because of where the comedy lies.
Scariness: 7/10 - Not the most scariest of films and it is one of the least scariest of them all.
Humour: 8/10 - Perfectly good humour with the Ewoks.
Continuity: 9/10 - Minor nit picks that don't make too much sense but generally very good.
Total: 42/50

Total: 144/160

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi: 90%

This is a very impressive score but as this is in my top half of Star Wars films I am surprised that other films will get lower.

Incoming Film Reviews

I will be doing reviews on films that I have seen that may be new or may be ones from the past. I will score them like my Doctor Who reviews but of course they will be two different result pages. I will also do Pros and Cons on some if not all of them as an addition.

Thursday, 17 December 2015

The Force Awakens has been released so it is nearly time to review that but I still have two more films to review.

Pros

Opening with a Battle - It starts of with a battle which is good to hook audiences from the start

The Empire - This is the only one of the original trilogy to properly show how dangerous the Empire are. In fact they are the threat instead of a super weapon

Bounty Hunters - It is really good to see some awesome villains that aren't involved with the Empire

Cliffhanger - This is a very good cliffhanger which sees the heroes defeated by loosing Han. This is good because in the original trilogy there isn't a lot of threat for the main characters' lives.

Cons

Story slows down in the middle - It starts and opens with really good elements but the middle section for me is very boring

Not Enough Women - In this one there is only one so that is certainly a problem.

Star Wars

The best film series returns with its 7th instalment on 18th December. I'm counting down the days.

10. Wings of the Master
9. The Lost Commanders
8. Blood Sisters
7. Brothers of the Broken Horn
6. Always To There Are
5. Future of the Force
4. Stealth Strike
3. Relics of the Old Republic
2. Legacy
1. Siege of Lothol

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope: Review

A New Hope may be the fourth in the series but it was the one to kick it all off.

Note: This does not include anything added in from the Special Edition as that is unfair on the film itself as it would be having a go at the special edition

Pros

The Story - The Story is magicial, new and exciting throughout

Showing life outside of the story - Like the Phantom Menace it brought us life outside of the rebel allience and the empire by showing us life on Tatooine

The Death Star - The Death Star is such a brilliant design and threating.

Space Battle - The Battle of Yavin may not be the best battle of the saga but it is very good and has the benefit of being the first ever battle.

Cons

The Lightsaber Duel - It was fine in it's original release but when the prequels came along it ruined this duel. Even without the prequels it is still not the most exciting

Not Enough Women - This is a problem throughout the original trilogy.

Doctor Who Series 9 Pros and Cons: Face the Raven/Heaven Sent/Hell Bent

Pros

Clara's death - Clara's death showed how a human can't be the Doctor. Shame it was ruined

Peter Capaldi - Peter's acting was truly amazing throughout all the episodes

Cliffhangers - The cliffhangers really did want you waiting for more. Especially the the ending of the second episode.

Trying something new - An episode with just the doctor on is own worked a lot better than Sleep No More.

Original TARDIS Interior - The Interior of the 1960's TARDIS is a great design so seeing it again is really good.

The Twist - I was really worired that Clara forgetting the Doctor was too similar to that of Donna's departure. However they changed it round with the Doctor forgetting Clara. Amazing.

Cons

Continuity - Not the best in Face the Raven as Cybermen running and being scared is not possible. The Sisterhood of Kahn getting to Gallifrey was also annoying

Clara being brought back - Clara's death in the first episode was really good but it was ruined by brining her back to life.

Rassilon and Gallifrey disappearing - They were forgotten about near the end which is really annoying as we haven't seen them in so long!

The Hybrid - The Hybrid wasn't rapped up very well.

Doctor Who Series 9 Pros and Cons: Sleep No More

Pros

Found Footage - Trying something new is always good (wasn't always the greatest however)

Rasmassun turning into sleep dust - This was very good special effects and creepy

Cons

The Sleep Dust - What were they! They wan't scary enough

Confusing - The whole thing was just a mess and no way of working out what was what.

The Ending - How did the ending work? I don't really understand that much how it was all solved.

Doctor Who Series 9 Pros and Cons: The Zygon Invasion/Zygon Inversion

Pros

The Zygons - Particularly in the first episode the zygons were brilliant and used to their absolute best and using their abilities to best too making them a unique monster.

The Political Background - Peter Harness did this last time focusing on abortion and this time on the ISIS dilemma. I think he did it mostly well and should that not all Muslims are ISIS like not all Zygons are part of Truth or Consequences.

The Amazing Speech - Apart from one little bit this was one of the best speeches in all of Doctor Who history.

The Revelation of Bonnie - Clara turning out to be Bonnie the Zygon for me was very unexpected and done really well. Jenna Coleman was also a great at acting Bonnie

The Church Scene - I know it is just one scene but it was the best scene of the whole series. It used the Zygons very well.

Cons

Too Much talking (part 2) - Again the talking in part 2 was too much, though it was far more interesting than the previous story.

The Resolution - I understand why Bonnie changed her mind but the fact that all the other Zygon terrorists agreed also was a bit too silly.

Doctor Who Series 9 Pros and Cons: The Girl who Died/The Woman who Lived

Pros

The Mire - The Mire are really really good monster race

Cons

Talking - In this there is awful amount of talking. Every episode/story needs talking but if the dialogue isn't interesting and there is so much of it can't be a good thing

The Pantomime Villain - David Schofield is such a great actor but he plays the role of a pantomine villain which in this case is not a good thing

Saving a girl he hardly knows - I understand that the Doctor is fed up with the people around him so he saves a little girl. It is annoying that he didn't do this to past people in his life who seem more important to him but that is not the worst thing of all this. The fact that he didn't even know Ashilda very well is the annoying part. They should have had her in it more for it to make more sense.

The Doctor's past face - This was rushed and not done to the best of ability.

Doctor Who Pros and Cons: Under the Lake/Before the Flood

Pros

The Ghosts - The Ghosts are menacing and a the best ghosts in Doctor Who

Base Under Siege - I love base under siege stories so It's always good to see one of these.

Deaths - It's good to see deaths again!

Going back in time before the events of the Episode - This is a really clever idea to go before the events of the 1st episode

Cons

The Ghosts at the end of Episode 1 - At the end of episode 1 when all the ghosts a put into the room where they can't escape they loose all the menace that they had established and the episode starts to slow down.

The Fisher King - The Fisher King is a fabulous villain but he is not used enough. He would have been a Pro if he was in it more.

Doctor Who Series 9: Pros and Cons: The Magician's Apprentice and Witches Familiar

A New item to my reviews that will not count to the overall percentage. This will be added to the standard review for series 10.

Pros

The New Who Tour Guide - It was great to see the Sisterhood of Kahn, UNIT, The Shadow Proclamation and the Maldourvorium .

Davros - Young Davros was expected due to the Mirror rumours but it sitll gave me the shivers. Julian Bleach's appearance was great and unexpected.

Skaro - Seeing Skaro in again and the Dalek City was truly amazing and excellent CGI. Seeing what the Daleks do on a day to day business was also very good.

The Cliffhanger - The cliffhanger was very very good, the revelation less so. The cliffhanger regained the menace of the daleks, which have been lost in recent years.

Cons

The Medieval Battle - The doctor was acting to strange for my licking in this scene and I did not like the 'dude' lines of dialogue.

Missy in 'Magician's Apprentice' - She was better again in the second episode but in the first she did not live up to expectations

The Cliffhanger Revelation - It was hard to sort out the cliffhanger well and Moffat didn't do the greatest job in my opinion. He shouldn't do great cliffhangers if he can't sort them out well in the second installment.

The Daleks - Although the Daleks had regained their menace in the first episode in the second they just sort of sat around.

The Davros-Doctor Plan - The Doctor knowing the Davros' plan is annoying and would have been better if he didn't know and Davros just got his plan wrong.

How did Davros Survive? - How did Davros survive the events of Journey's End? It was not explained

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of the Sith: A Review

Revenge of the Sith

The Third episode of the Star Wars SAGA

Pros

The Awesomeness: Hardly the best word to use but that is the best thing to say when asked what is good about the film
The Lightsaber Duels: The Duels are choreographed amazingly well and there are so many of them.
Kashyyyk - Seeing all the wookies is amazing because they appeal to the children like the ewoks did (cute and cuddly) but the older fans aren't annoyed by them.
The Acting isn't that bad as well and there is hardly any Jar Jar Binks

Cons

Wrapping up the Saga - C 3P0's mind wipe is an easy way out to make sure it makes sense. Also not everything actually fits correctly, for example Obi Wan forgetting R2 D2

Doctor Who Series 9 Reviews #13: The Final Concludes: Hell Bent

Hell Bent by Steven Moaffat

Hell Bent marks the final appearance of Clara Oswold, the reappearance of The General, Ashilda, Ohila, Rassalon, the Time Lords, the Barn, the Matrix, the original TARDIS Interior, the Daleks and the Weeping Angles.

This episode is generally good but there are a lot of errors in it.

  • If Gallifrey is frozen in time how did Ohila and the Sisterhood of Kahn mange to get to Gallifrey?
  • Therefore how did the Doctor and Clara leave Gallifrey.:
  • And if the Doctor was so desperate to return to Gallifrey why were they his enemies (I know about the high council were evil but not all the others)
  • If he was desperate to go to Gallifrey surely Ohila should have told him?
  • How is the barn now in view of the Citadel?
  • How did an upgraded Cyberman mange to get into the Matrix as when Gallifrey was frozen they were not in that design?
  • The TARDIS The Doctor and Clara stole was a Type 40, which presumably were no longer are in use
  • How was Ashilda still alive? She is immortal through old age but can be killed. It is very lucky she survived 100 Trillion years.
  • The Time Lord High Council Guard carry weapons that can kill a Time Lord outright so how did the General regenerate?
  • How did the General regenerate into a character with eye liner on?
  • When Clara went off in her TARDIS the Doctor's TARDIS appeared, which surely meant that it was in Clara's TARDIS. Then why didn't we see it.
  • How is Clara still Alive?
  • Why did the Doctor have to wipe her memory or his own?
  • Why on earth would the diner be the same one seen in Utah in 1969?
  • Who was the Hybrid?
A Lot of errors but is good to see Gallifrey again even if it was discarded near the end.

Doctor Rating

Doctor Rating: 10/10

Perfect as usual

Clara Osworld: 9/10

I am annoyed that she was brought back to life.

Enemy Rating

Rassalon: 8/10
Time Lords: 7/10
Time Wraiths: 7/10
Weeping Angels: 9/10
Total: 31/40

Rassalon was good but like the Time Lords he was discarded near the end. The Weeping Angles were good but they good have been moving when Clara was seeing them.

Story Rating

Story: 8/10
Scariness: 7/10
Seriousness: 9/10
Continuity: 8/10
Humour: 8/10
Total: 40/50

Although I have moaned about the continuity it was still good to see so many references to the past which were mostly done correctly.

The General: 9/10
The Female General: 6/10
Ohila: 9/10
Gastron: 7/10
Ashila: 8/10
Total:  39/50

Ashila wasn't top notch and the General and Ohila didn't get full marks because of how they finished in the story.
