It is important to stress, as seen by the rankings above, that I suffer from recent episode syndrome. That is, when a series comes out, I rank it higher then, before in time ranking it lower. Series 8, the first series I reviewed on this site eight years ago, is a prime example. It started off in second place, of those eight series that it was comparable to at the time, it is now 5th.

Now lets take a look at the updated list after the release of Series 13.

Series 13

1. Series 4 = 7.93 (+0.06)
2. Series 2 = 7.64 (-)
3. Series 1 = 7.50 (+0.1)
4. Series 3 = 7.20 (-)
5. Series 5 = 7.10 (-)
6. Series 10 = 6.92 (-0.08)
7. Series 9 = 6.90 (+0.1)
8. Series 8 = 6.82 (-)
9. Series 6 = 6.67 (+0.09)
10. Series 7 = 6.65 (-)
11. Series 13 = 6.25 (NEW)
12. Series 12 = 5.67 (-0.58)
13. Series 11 = 5.64 (-0.09)

So there we have it. First thing to note is the recent episode syndrome taking action once more. Series 12's collapse is larger than any other change in my update, which is no surprise because it was the last series to be ranked. Series 12's collapse is not too dissimilar to that of Series 11 when I did the update in 2020, after the release of Series 12.

Series 13 comes in as the best of the Chibnall three, by some margin. However, it is important to note that both Series 12 and Series 11 started off at a similar score, around the 6.2 margin. Series 12 and Series 11 are now both pretty close, with Series 11 just topping it off at the bottom. Five of the series cross the average of being above seven, seven of the series are in the six range, and two do not even make that.

My ranking continues what has occurred previously of all of RTD's series being at the front, followed by all six of Moffat's and concluding with all three of Chibnall's. The fact not a single Chibnall series has managed to cross even Moffat's weakest is testament to how poor the show has been under Chibnall. I would find it highly unlikely if this was to ever change, as Series 13 is only likely to continue to fall, probably to the same depths as Series 11 and 12 whose scores (below six) I only ever gave to one RTD era episode.

The ranking of Moffat's series however has changed. Series 9 and 8 have swapped places, with Series 9 now being Moffat's third best series, and Series 8 being fourth best. Series 7 has now dropped below series 6 as the worst of Moffat's series. This surprises me, and perhaps when I finish my series 7 rewatch that I am currently on, that will alter.

With RTD coming back, there will be likely high quality Doctor Who coming back. I will be interested to see whether RTD on his second round will be able to top any of his original 4. This we will have to see.

Doctor Who: Top 10 Jodie Whitaker Stories

Jodie Whitaker's era has come to a close, so here are my top 10 Jodie Whitaker stories.

10. The Woman who Fell to Earth - the fact this episode, a 6/10, is in the top 10 is sort of a testament to how many poor episodes there are in Jodie Whitaker's era. The opening episode sets the era up well, but perhaps gives the impression it will be better than it actually will be. Many of the elements in this very inadequately addressed to go, but this episode does introduce elements of intrigue at least. Tsim Shaw is a pretty weak villain, but the focus is not on him. The decision for him to return later on in the series was a weird one, but that is no fault of this episode.

9. Rosa - although in at number 9, I am not fully on board the 'Rosa is fantastic' train to be honest. The episode is good, but it is not a classic. The villain is incredibly two dimensional with a very weak motivation. But the underlying theme of racism was a good topic to address, and it dealt with it very well for a difficult topic. I did not like the song on the credits though. But that is a minor nit pick.

8. Kerblam! - Kerblam was a good episode but again nothing special.

7. Revolution of the Daleks - this episode has its faults but I do think the fandom undervalues it.

6. Demons of the Punjab - I think this episode, as an historical goes,  is superior to Rosa. I think it deals with the historical issue very well and is better rounded story.

5. Eve of the Daleks - for a festive special, this was a 'nice' little adventure.

4. The Haunting of the Villa Diodati - this was very well written and I remember at the time being particularly impressed by two things. One, Ryan was actually well written and likeable. And two, Jodie Whitaker's Doctor had a big decision to make - over whether to give the lone cyberman what it wants or not. She felt like the Doctor in this episode. Something Chibnall found difficult.

3. Spyfall - part one especially was very good. The monsters were different and very intriguing and the Master reveal was superb. The second part lets it down somewhat. And it is troubling that the Doctor sends the Master to a Nazi concentration camp.

2. Fugitive of the Judoon - this episode started off as a pleasant Judoon adventure and ended up being one of the most mysterious stories written, with an added addition of Captain Jack for good measure. The mystery of who the Fugitive Doctor was made this episode a good one, though what the Fugitive Doctor turned out to be was something I was not so fond off. This has dampered by view of this episode somewhat.

1.Power of the Doctor - Whitaker's final episode is riddled with plot holes. Riddled. But the fan service and the emotional acting of Whitaker and Mandip Gill as Yaz does allow this episode to end up being her best. A fitting end, to end with the best.

I had a think back to previous 'three series' Doctors of the modern era, Tennant, Smith and Capaldi. To highlight the difference in standards, I wondered whether any of these top 10 episodes of Whitaker would make it into theirs. I believe Power of the Doctor might make it in to Smith and Capaldi's, maybe even Fugitive of the Judoon. That is it. Not one of Whitaker's would make it anywhere near Tennant's top 10.

Doctor Who Series 13: Complete Ranking of Stories

Now Jodie Whitaker has complete her tenure as the Doctor, it is time to rank her last series. There were four stories in Series 13. Although a quater of the stories, the first one, Flux, made up 2/3 of the episode count.

My ranking is thus.

4. Legend of the Sea Devils: 5/10 - This episode bought back the Sea Devils, a long awaited return of a classic series monster. However, was it any good? No. The story was weak, and it came across very cheap. It had similar issues to many previous Whitaker episodes. This includes a lot of mixed messaging of morality. For example, the Doctor stopped the execution of a Sea Devil, only for the next scene to have Dan murder Sea Devils for comic relief. It was overall quite a poor story, but there have been far worse in the Whitaker era.

3. Flux: 5/10 - Flux was six episodes of really quite mixed quality, as seen in my review of it last year. Episode 4, Village of Angels was quite spectacular really. A solid script where the Weeping Angels were used effectively. Episode 2, War of the Sontarans, was also quite a good episode. However, the other episodes were quite disjointed. The first episode set the story up pretty well but the last episode wrapped things up horrifically. I can think back now to the Doctor voicing over the top of the McGuffin as it sucks in all the flux. Let us not forget this episode also had mixed moral messaging. The Doctor stopped the Crimean soldiers from blowing up the Sontarans, only for her to commit mass genocide in the last episode. Episode 3 has to have a special mention though. It was unbelievably boring. It is the worst episode in Doctor Who history. I have never hoped for an episode to end so much before in all my life. Painful.

2. Eve of the Daleks: 7/10 - This episode was quite a bit of fun. It was quite a simple story, but there is nothing wrong with that. It just wasn't anything particularly special. Some of the dialogue, as is the case in any Whitaker era episode, was quite ropey, but overall this was quite a good story.

1. Power of the Doctor: 8/10 - Whitaker's last episode was actually quite good. It has a lot of flaws, an awful amount of plot holes, but I have to say the fan service has certainly got me for now. It was quite an epic. I do think Dan and Yaz's exits were quite poor, they were just binned off. The Doctor's regeneration cause was also as if Chibnall had forgotten that he had to make his Doctor regenerate. Which is probably the case to be honest. The dialogue in places was also very ropey. I am particularly thinking of the scene were Ace and Tegan talk over the Ipad. The plot also was very confusing and made no sense. The Master could just pretend to be a shape shifting alien, the Doctor, without taking her body surely? That being said I enjoyed seeing Ace and Tegan back and all the other companions at the end. And of course the classic Doctors. But none more so then the fact David Tennant is back! As the current Doctor! This is something I, along with many others, predicted, but it was still a great thing to see. I squeeled with joy. I also have to say with this episode that Jodie Whitaker and Mandip Gill's acting was superb, and probably the best of both of their works. I think the story probably should have had more screentime for the Doctor. I don't think I can recall a single proper regeneration story where the Doctor leaving does not have the most screentime. I imagine both Yaz and the Master had more screentime than her in this episode. More plot holes I have to mention is how did Tegan survive her fall and if the Cybermen were able to shoot Ace, why could they not just leave? Also why was Ashad there? What was the point? Same goes for Vinder. Completely pointless. I am just pleased they did not say that he was the Doctor's father as I worried.

Overall, a pretty poor series, but that is normal for Whitaker. Stay refreshed for my top 10 Whitaker episodes and my latest series ranking.

Doctor Who Series 13 Review, Ranking and Scores

Well Series 13 is complete. The last full series of Jodie Whitaker, and more importantly showrunner Chris Chibnall.

For the second time in the show's history, the entire series is one story. Thus I can give it only one score. However as the next three specials are also in this series it will affect the total score quite considerably when I revisit it.

This series was really a mixed back to be honest. Some episodes, as I will get onto, were very good, others were really not. To be honest, the more the episode stayed away from the Flux storyline the better the episode tended to be.

Jodie Whitaker's Doctor was more bearable this series. As per usual a Doctor, no matter how poor they are, does grow on you. I am however finding myself counting down the episodes until she leaves (three more!)

Yaz is turning out to be one of the most longest serving companions in Doctor Who history, yet she still underdeveloped and does not really have a personality of her own. She shines more brightly here as the story allows it, but still lacking the development that companions have had in the past, including Nardole.

Dan after six episodes is already my favourite Chibnall era companion. John Bishop is not an amazing actor, and his delivery is rather poor in places, but that is what works for Dan. Dan is John Bishop. If you see it for how it is, then Dan is a likeable character. However why Dan would want to travel with the Doctor after Flux I do not know. Normally companions have off-screen nice adventures where no one dies. Dan has not had this.

As for the other characters, Vinder and Bel were completely useless, dull, boring and wasted a lot of time for no reason. Karvinsta was quite good but the juxtaposition of Dan telling dog jokes whilst then explaining how Karvninsta is the last of his kind after a mass genocide, which goes over looked, is a bit tasteless. Jerricho is a good character, although he finds himself lacking to do something as the show goes on. Kate Stewart's return was pointless as all she did was stand in some tunnels, which to be fair, is also all that Joseph Williamson did.

Swarm and Azure started off being very menacing and mysterious. However as time grew on they really didn't do much at all, and became incredibly pantomime. The Sontarans were the villains again after a comedic stunt under Moffat, and that is warmly welcomed. They were used well, although I dislike their fascination of chocolate. The weeping angels though have to be the stand out of this series.

As for the storyline, it all was incredibly convoluted and wrapped up worse than Series 6 and 9. I still hate the Timeless Children and did not enjoy its return here. Tectuan appearing so briefly and then killed also extended the waste of time that whole arc was. The Fugitive Doctor only having a cameo as well wasted the only good thing that had come from the timeless children.

The Ranking

6. Once Upon Time: 3/10 - Once Upon Time was incredibly dull. It is certainly a contender for the worst episode of not just New Who but all of Doctor Who. I have never found myself in a situation where I have waited for an episode to end. I did for this. Bel was inconsequential, and later of course remained so. The dialogue was hammy. The script, all over the place. It manages to achieve a three because the intrigue in the Doctor's past was something at least to discuss. But the episode was mainly dribble.

5. The Vanquishers: 5/10 - The finale of the series. Again it all came together like a lead balloon. So much exposition and cringe as is per usual in the Chibnall era. Thrown in at the end of course is the classic McGuffin in the shape of Passenger with Jodie dialogue disposed on the top for good measure. Kate Lethbridge Stewart did nothing at all and the Sontarans ate chocolate. It left me in despair

4. Survivors of the Flux: 6/10 - I actually thought this episode was better than what most thought. It fell in the same jump start mess as Once Upon Time but this time, I actually found myself interested. I enjoyed the UNIT stuff although of course it was pointless. BUT of course the Timeless Children have to come in and ruin everything. Essentially Tectuan just confirms that what the Master said was true and then listed more questions that Chibnall (thankfully) does not have time to answer. I do not like the Timeless Children, and I still don't.

3. The Halloween Apocalypse: 7/10 - An incredibly dodgy start with ropey dialogue, but the story, although still jump starty, was at least at this point intriguing and the villains were actually for once threatening. Dan also was well introduced.

2. War of the Sontarans: 7/10 - Again well written and arguably the best written episode of the Chibnall era that Chibnall wrote himself. The Crimean War was interesting, although I would have loved more time exploring the area. The Sontarans were threatening, although some comedic elements still lagging which I did not like. Dan was funny so Chibnall managed the impossible by actually writing good comedy.

1. Village of Angels: 8/10 - An incredibly good episode, only the Flux part makes it not worthy of a 9, an incredible feat. This is without a doubt the best episode of the Whitaker era, but alas its scores will be reflected in the general overall average. Maxine Alderton can write effectively for characters. Jerricho is a character that I will remember, when I cannot remember much at all about Ryan. I was worried Chibnall would ruin the Weeping Angels like he has ruined other things but actually they were scary and the lore around them was expanded incredibly effectively. The cliffhanger was very good and I reject the assertion it was too over the top. Its Doctor Who. Its often over the top.

Overall I would give the story a 6/10. I won't do a series ranking fully because I feel that is unfair at this stage as although six episodes have aired of the series, we are only 1/4 of the way through. However I would say at the moment this is the best Whitaker series but fails to top any Moffat or RTD series.
